Not knowing what year toyota p/u you have I will tell you about mine. 1990 sr5 5 speed ( v-6 ) to remove the stick shift on this one you push straight down on the stick its self while turning it counter clockwise. this releases the stick and then you can pull the tranny. yours may differ though so when in doubt check a shop manual for your vehicle ( I may have a shop manual to cover yours . let me know the year )
September 9, 2011 at 11:00 am #456309I did this job not all that long ago to replace a clutch on a 1990 2 wheel drive Toyota pickup with a 22RE, removing the shifter really is one of the easier parts of the job. If you pull the rubber boot back and some of the carpeting, you’ll see six or so bolts that hold the shifter assembly in. You just remove the bolts and pull it straight off.
September 9, 2011 at 11:00 am #456310its a 1984. i think i am getting close to needing a new one. i have seen some fords and Chevy that screw out i think. i never had a clutch go bad on me but the guy who had this before beat it to hell. so do all clutches pretty much get taking out from inside the car? i am sure this one is pretty easy i just cant find this step in my manual. maybe i need a different one. and will the boot just come off or do i need to cut it?

I’ve never seen a shifter boot that has to be cut.
September 9, 2011 at 11:00 am #456307You do have to remove it. If you can’t get to the fasteners from under the truck (there should be 6 near the base of the shifter) then you will probably have to remove a plate in the floor to gain access. Good luck.
September 10, 2011 at 11:00 am #456312Just had a chance to check my toyota p/u shop manual. pretty easy… if you have a center console remove any screws holding it down ( unscrew the shift lever ball at top and you can slide this console all the way off. next you should see bolts holding the shift lever into the trans. undo those pull the lever out and away you go
September 11, 2011 at 11:00 am #456313so when you say console you mean the console around the shift lever? i thought i just had to take the boot off? ooo you mean the console on my shifter? mine just has the shifter lever and a rubber boot. i guess its an older model.
September 11, 2011 at 11:00 am #456314Some models came with a plastic console at the base of the shift lever that would be attached to the cab floor. if yours doesnt have one then you just need to unfasten the rubber boot at the base of the shift lever pull that up out of the way and then you can get to the bolts that hold the shift lever to the trans. take those out and pull the shift lever up through the floor ( make sure to have the lever in neutral before unbolting it.Quoted From nico27004:
