I have a 1999 honda civic lx with automatic transmission. Problem is while driving down the road, the car will stop shifting completely. If I turn off the car and start it again, then it will get going again, but then shortly after it will stop shifting completely. Repeat the process and I can get going again. Sometimes it’s hard to start, but if I wait a while, I can get it started. There is a whining sound in park and neurtral sometimes, but in no other gears (when it’s working). Had a recent code come up for a p0740 a while back which was reset, then had a p0730 a while after that when it started shifting weird. Currently no codes. I checked the solenoids first by applying power to them from the battery, and they are clicking. I did not take them off to see if they were dirty. I changed the fluid. Old fluid was dark, but didn’t appear burnt.
Any ideas? Should I try cleaning the solenoids?

Do a 3 x 3 drain and refill with HONDA FLUID. If it still occurs after that, take it to a shop that specializes in transmissions. There is very little you can do with an auto trans other than a drain & refill or replacement.
The p0730 indicates some internal malfunction of the automatic transmission, chances are you are doing more damage to it by driving on it while its obviously malfunctioning. You may want to start looking at pricing a salvage yard transmission. Also what is the mileage on this vehicle?
I did a drain and fill times 3. Fluid was dark, but not burnt looking or smelling. Vehicle has 225,000 miles on it. I haven’t noticed much improvement. The car will drive, will experience some erratic shifting, then stop shifting altogether. Turn the car off for a 1-2 seconds, turn it back on, and it will shift again. Then same result.
