I have a 1996 silverado 5.7 and the transmission went out in it so i got a used one put in it about 5 months ago and ever since i picked it up whenever I put it in drive the indicator light flickers on and off but it shifted fine and everything so i didn’t worry about it. Recently when I’m driving down the road the guages start going crazy and the trans goes into limp mode. When I turn the engine off then back on it goes back to normal but this is like the 3rd time it’s happened. Any ideas?

check to see if any codes are stored. It sounds like theres an electrical problem
going on. Check any wiring around the trans area for pinching or rub through.Who put trannie in? You or shop? If shop, take truck back to them.
Thing is, GM has quite infamous BCM and TCM. Body control module and Transmission control module. Those are known to be very temperamental. Also, like anything from GM, it all has to match VIN numbers and s/w has to match for any component just so.
For what I know from my Silverado times and their forums, you can’t just toa any trannie onto those cars, everything has to match.
Or, like CM said – it’s basic electrical.
Also, don’t forget that GM vehicles go into limp mode for reasons quite unexpected sometimes. I was in a shop doing some tire work on mine and overheard conversation when a GM truck went into lim,p mode because of leaking radiator. Go figure.Not sure if it helps, but I had the same problem on my dodge dakota, the problem was a harness connector on my transmission getting hot and not making a good connection, when hooked up to a scanner, it read the gear selector jumping allover the place wildly and erratically. Had to get a new plug
Yes a shop put it in but today i crawled underneath there to see if any of the wires looked damaged and i noticed a small bolt tangeled in between the wires near the gear selector so i took it out started the truck and the indicator isn’t flashing anymore like it has been for the past 5 months… Kind of odd but I’ve driven it around all day and its been fine i dont know if its gonna go into limp mode again ill have to wait and see ill take it back to the shop if it acts up again. I have one more question. The 1-2 shift seems a tad bit slow and my last tranny did this also but I’ve heard that a bad tps can cause this and the engine idle goes high to low and almost dies when I start it sometimes.. I’ve replaced the maf sensor before too. I don’t know could be unrelated i just thought i would ask. Thanks for all the info you have given me
