I have a 1979 Chevy K5 Blazer with the 350ci small block and a turbo 350 transmission behind it, the trans shifts good into drive and doesn’t seem to leak while in drive, however when the truck is put into reverse, when cold sometimes it doesn’t fully lock into gear until the engine is revved for a moment it’ll move backwards but only when revved really high but if left in reverse long enough you feel it lock into reverse and it’ll work fine. however no matter what is happening (whether cold or warm) it’ll puke a fair amount of tranny fluid out until it is taken out of reverse. when put into drive, it shifts very solidly and doesn’t have an issue with leaking.

      any ideas?

IIRC there are fittings on the side of the case that are used for measuring pressures in the tranny (i.e. diagnostics). I’d wager that there is one for the reverse clutch/band (band IIRC) and that’s your leak. As for the rough shift, could be due to the leak, however, if it did that for a while the slip could have cooked the clutch/band material, which would warrant a rebuild.

If possible, fix the leak first, and see if the shift issue goes away.
