I have a 92 subaru legacy that has a manual transmission and when you drive it it will rev up to aprox 3000 rpm in each gear and when you let up on the gas the rpm will drop down to normal rpm and run the way It’s suppose to run. Is this the symptom of a shift solenoid or a slipping tranny. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the video and thanks for the video Eric I will try those tricks as soon as I get my hands on the car. I will keep everyone posted
May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #456264Its a manual tranaxle so there is no shift solenoid. Those are located in Automatic transmissions.
It sounds like a slipping clutch.
Here is a video from Eric that may help –

May 19, 2012 at 11:00 am #456269I followed erics video and I put the car in 2nd and let up on the clutch and the car pretty much died when the cars clutch was pushed in. Could it still be the tranny. Oh yeah I put the e brake on and the car died when I let up on the clutch pedal. Thanks again everyone.
May 20, 2012 at 11:00 am #456270Here’s my update: I checked my clutching again per what the video did and sure enough with the parking brake engaged and in 2nd gear the car doesn’t stall now so clutch replacement here I come. Does anyone have any tips or words of encouragement 🙂 . It’s a 92 subaru legacy 4wd
May 20, 2012 at 11:00 am #456271I would recommend a FSM manual if your going to tackle the job or watch some Youtube video’s on clutch replacements so you can familiarize yourself with them. Also make sure you have all the correct tools for the job before you start to tackle it.
Here is one Eric made on a Ford Focus –

Good luck and keep us posted.
May 22, 2012 at 11:00 am #456272I don’t think the job will be too bad since the engine is mounted in the traditional way (front to back) making it easier to remove, the Focus video that was posted should help with some of the other things you might run into during the job. Good luck.

I was wondering what would cause a car to start losing power and sputter when you floor the gas pedal(push all the way to the floor). It drives fine but seems to shift hard when its down shifting (its an automatic). Is this a tranny issue and if so is there any testing I can do to diagnose the issue if it is tranny issues. Thanks in advance
As always it would help to have year make and model of the vehicle you have questions about
Check to see if there are any trouble codes in the TCM sometimes transmission codes do not turn on check engine light.May 31, 2012 at 11:00 am #456274Oh yeah, 1987 Jaguar xj6 sorry about that
May 31, 2012 at 11:00 am #456275First and foremost is to check the level of the tranny fluid and also check the condition too. The fluid shouldnt be over or under filled and should be red/pink. It shouldnt smell burnt or have small bubbles or debris in it.
May 31, 2012 at 11:00 am #456276It could be any number of things..
Is it a misfire?
Is it making a clunk when it down shifts?
The two problems could or could not be related.May 31, 2012 at 11:00 am #456277Do you have a check engine light? If you do, definitely see what code you have and go from there.
May 31, 2012 at 11:00 am #456278The fluid is right were its suppose to be and there is a misfire and it does clunk when it down shifts.
