I don’t know if these will fit. can this guy guarantee that these transmissions
will work.?What about having the current trans evaluated by a trans shop?
It may not be as serious as you think. I would hate to see you buy these transmissions
do the work for install and the trans be bad.then you are no better off. -

Hi college man,
I live in a rural area and am fearful of driving the van very far. Should I just continue to drive it until the transmission quits? Actually, it will be my 17 y/o son who will be driving it.The tranny was already slipping when the ‘wonder mechanic’ put the cleaner in the tranny. So I can assume that the trainny is shot.
The trannys I am looking at will cost $100.00 for both.
I just need to know if I can power flush the radiator and the transmission cooler and if so can you give me step by step instructions?
Like I said earlier, The entire cooling system has been repaired, EXCEPT for the read heater core. He bypassed it because there was anitfreeze leaking from the rear bumper!!
Thanks again
July 22, 2012 at 11:00 am #464013ive worked with dodge vehicles all my life. the ram van is pretty much the same as the cargo van except for the cargo van being on a longer frame. the A518 tranny was renamed to the 46RH in 1992 which used a hydraulic controlled governor. not to be confused the the 46RE which uses an electronic controlled governor. they used these trannys in the vans and the dodge ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 with V8 engines. however after 95 they used the 46RE. so you can also pull that tranny from any dodge ram made from 94-95. so from my knowledge, those transmissions will fit. but be careful. the b250 also used the A500. in which case the A518 will not fit. find out which transmission you have in your van. if is has the A518, than that and the 46RH will fit. if its the A500, than that is the only tranny that will fit. also, the A500 was a tranny that was very limited in use so odds are you have an A518. an easy way to tell if you have an A500 is if you hear a faint whistle as you accelerate and deccelerate. but check to be safe.
but like college man said, i would get the original looked at just incase its something minor. if not, now you know what vehicles to get that tranny from.
also they make kits to flush cooling systems. you can buy em at any auto parts joint. you just hook up a garden hose to the T that comes with the kit and run the engine. but do NOT flush a dodge transmission. if the tranny hasnt gone out, it will as soon as you flush it. for some reason those trannys will not tolerate a power flush, new or old.

The other one has 342-2July 23, 2012 at 11:00 am #464021Something else you may want to consider, should you decide to buy those transmissions is this. It may be worth it to you to take one or both of those transmission to a transmission shop and have them tested to see if they’re any good, and to have them rebuilt/repaired as needed. Also, provided that those transmissions will fit in your van, if you have both of them rebuilt, you’ll have a spare that you know will work.

July 23, 2012 at 11:00 am #464016Very sorry to hear about your husband, my condolences. As for the van I don’t know the specifics on the transmission but it looks like Sam_priem had a good reply for you on that. If you’ve just lost reverse gear perhaps it’s just a problem with a band or servo however if you’re in there it makes sense to address other issues and often times there are other issues. Flushing cooler lines is not rocket science, you can buy a can of trans cooler flush from your local auto parts store, all you do is hook the hose into one of the cooler lines after you disconnect them and aim the other line into a drain pan and pull the trigger. I use half the can going in one direction and the other half of the can going the other direction when I do the flush.
Keep us posted.
July 23, 2012 at 11:00 am #464017So what are these transmissions? If I can identify them, as the ones I need then I will get them. Otherwise, I will let the owner know what he actually has, so he can sell them.
Thanks!!
July 23, 2012 at 11:00 am #464018The transmissions should have numbers/letters stamped somewhere on there casing or on a tag so you can ID them.
Hopefully someone with more Dodge transmission experience here can put a name on them for you Cool

July 25, 2012 at 11:00 am #464024Keep us posted. A good point was brought up about the operation of the used transmissions you’re getting, if they don’t work then you’ll have to take it out all over again. If you’re buying it from a reputable place however this shouldn’t be a problem.
