Ok, so as the title says I’m in the process of installing an inline thermostat for my transmission oil coolers. currently my aftermarket cooler is plumbed in series with my factory cooler in the radiator. My question is do I plumb the thermostat before both or just before the aftermarket one?

Here is a diagram of what I’m thinking. Which location should put the thermostat. 1 or 2?

You want the thermostat BEFORE the aftermarket cooler. What you want is for the fluid to bypass the aftermarket cooler and go through the radiator until it’s warm enough.

Yea see that’s what I was thinking. Just couldn’t find any information on it. The instructions are pretty generic. I even emailed the manufacture just waiting to hear back. Thanks.

1: Transmission Feed(Hot) line to radiator
            2. Radiator outlet to thermostat
            3. Bypass in thermostat to return to tranny when cold
            4. Thermostat opens warm: line to aftermarket cooler
            5. Fluid flows through aftermarket cooler to return to tranny

If you set it up something like this, you are golden.

Ok cool. I’ll go get some fittings and get this thing installed today. Cooler I have is to big really. In the summer time when it’s 100+ my temp is typically 160* but it. I didn’t start driving it regularly again till about a month ago and the temp when it’s cold out struggles to get above 110* so I think this will solve my problem.

Anything after 175 starts to degrade the fluid and anything under 145 makes the transmission work harder than it has to as a general rule of thumb.

Well I got it plumed in been driving around for a while 50* outside now and the hottest temp I’ve gotten was 160*. Sensor us in the test port. Seems like it should warm up way faster than this. I’d said I driven 20 miles mostly city once on the highway.

That’s good. 160 degrees is the perfect temp to run at..right in the middle of the range I gave you. You said it takes a while for it to heat up to 160 though? What is the thermostat rated at?

The thermostat is rated for 180*. I’m not sure how accurate the sender is where it’s installed though. If I had my scanner I could compare it to the factory sender in the transmission.

I think I’m go to move the sender to the pan and see what happens.

Yea that’s what I’ve read. Been thinking which location to install the sender. Might even get a second sensor and do both.

I planned on doing it today but mother nature said no. As soon as it’s moved I’ll report back.
