I changed the radiator on 2002 Cavalier with 2.2 engine (VIN 4 engine). How much trans fluid do I need to replace what was lost in the radiator trans fluid cooler? I’m guessing about 8 ounces but that is strictly a WAG. There is no dipstick for the trans fluid on this vehicle. How do you check the trans fluid level?

There is a small plug close to where the passenger side axle goes into the trans. You will need to block the wheels and jack up the car enough to wriggle under it.

With a warm engine running remove the plug (7/16 r 11mm). If fluid runs out it’s too full let it drain out. If fluid does not run out add fluid until it starts to run out.

There is a red cap bout center of the top of the transmission closer to the engine where you fill it.

Thanks for the reply and information. I knew there had to be a way to check it. Just needed an idea which way to head. Now as soon as the rain lets up some I’ll slide under there and see what I can do. Thanks!!

Keep in mind if you’re checking the fluid level you’ll need to jack up all 4 wheels to make the vehicle level. That said, I don’t think that just loosing what you had in the radiator is going to effect anything. You might leave well enough alone but it wouldn’t hurt to check the fluid level. Given that it’s so difficult to check, it’s probably been some time since it was checked or changed. Good luck.

Thank you for the response and information. You are probably right about having to raise the car up equally to get under and check the trans level. Main problem around the St. Louis area is finding any area that is level to begin with. Seems like most things are either uphill, downhill, or around the side of a hill. LOL I did not feel like very much fluid was lost so I only added eight ounces and let it go until I find a good level place to check it at.

Thanks for the info. You have a great site here. Informative and informal and knowledgeable as far as I can tell so far. I appreciate having a place to go when I don’t quite feel sure of what I am getting into! Thanks again!

I think you should be fine with that. Especially if you don’t have any shifting problems. I’m glad you like the site. A lot of work went into it and it seems to be helping a lot of people. I’m quite proud of it if I do say so myself.

Thanks for the update and good luck.
