I have been trying to track down a vibration felt in the cab that occurs in park around 1000rpm and 2500rpm but it can slightly be felt in other various rpm ranges and when driving it occurs around 1500rpm and 2000rpm in all gears. I can put it in drive and hold the brake and still get the vibration at 1000rpm. I have looked it all over and what I have found is the majority of the vibration can be seen at the tail of the trans and in the driveline. I first disconnected the driveshaft at the differential but the vibration was still there so I remove the transmission mount and left the trans sitting with a jack under it. That eliminated the vibration felt in the cab but the vibration resonates down my jack. I reinstalled the mount and unbolted the torque converter and this also eliminated the vibration. So it seems to me the vibration is in the torque converter or in the transmission. I have read on other forums that folks had vibrations in other makes and models that went away after diconnecting the torque converter so the replaced the torque converter and flexplate and that did not correct the issue. Any advice would be great.

The engine isn’t misfiring, right? I had a friend who’s vehicle vibrated while under load and at lower RPM’s because it was only running on 7 cylinders.

No engine miss. I’ve spent several hours following that route. All is good. It vibrates when accelerating, decelerating and cruising and when parked in those rpm sweet spots I have listed. Thanks for the input though. And I want to add that the vibration can be felt more in the back seat I am guessing since the vibration is exiting the tail of the trans and along the crossmember.

Sounds eerily similar to the issue I was having:

When I was trying to figure out my vibration issue, I read in other forums symptoms that sounded similar to mine that ended up being exhaust-related, but for some reason I was convinced my issue was something else so it took me longer than necessary to resolve. It’s at least worth checking out your exhaust system and exhaust hangers. It might also be worth taking your accessory belt off and running the vehicle briefly to make sure it’s not related to any of the accessory pulleys.

Thanks for the reply. I actually disconnected the exhaust hangers and let the exhaust hang freely and there was no change in the vibration. I was really wondering about that because one exhaust hanger is mounted to the tail of the trans and was sure that was going to be my issue but no luck there. That’s when I found that when the trans mount was removed that the vibration went away. One of the first things I did was unhook the belt and ran it when i saw the water pump was leaking from the weep hole so I replaced it and replaced the fan clutch since it had some play it did not make a difference with the belt off.

Hmmm, sounds like you’ve pretty much covered the easy stuff. Have you checked the dampener in the crankshaft pulley? The next step might be a chassis ear to track down specifically where the sound is coming from.

The balancer looks damn near perfect at sight. It doesn’t wobble or anything. The only other option there would be to have the balance checked professionally but would a vibration from the balancer disappear with the torque converter unbolted? As for the vibration it is most noticeable at the tail of the trans. I has my wife sit in the car and I wedged a screw driver in the trans mount and she said it just amplified the vibration.

Maybe try replacing that transmission mount if you haven’t already. Did anything change in the months leading up to the vibration? Did you swap any parts of add/delete anything?

Seems definitely like something periodic with the speed of the engine. Any chance this truck has balance shafts? I had this same thing in a car where the plastic balance chain guide broke and the balance shafts shifted a cog or two and were out of time. It felt like a vibration through the steering wheel that was always at the same RPM. It was a GM vehicle but a 4 cylinder one.

Did some reading and it seems that a few others with this vehicle had vibration problems that were fixed by replacing the engine mounts. Might want to take a peak there and see if they’re rotten.

I did forget to mention I replaced the engine mount on the right side because it looked a little bulged and that made no change in vibration so I pulled it back out and put it on the left side and that made no change in the vibration. As for the trans mount it looks pretty good. I looked it over and it had no cracks or anything. I noticed that there was possibly a small shutter in all gears not long after we purchased the vehicle and it had 89,000 miles one it. My wife said something about it shaking earlier this year and I kind of just blew it off since I don’t drive it much but after I drove it and payed more attention it is vibrating pretty bad. It has 105,000 on it now. I noticed the other day the tranny fluid was kind of dark and had a burnt smell to it. The precious owner wrote his maintenance records in the manual and it said the tranny fluid was changed at 60,000 miles. Maybe they put the wrong fluid in it. Had a 2006 Sierra a quick lube put Dexron III in the tranny and it required Dexron VI and it caused the torque converter to shudder.
