Toyota Yaris, will not start

I am working on a 2008 Toyota Yaris that overheated and now it will not crank. The drive belt brok whil he was driving it on the highway, and it overheated. I put a new belt on it and now when i crank it , it doesnt engage, Just turns, kind of a fast high pitch. Not like its engaging the crank shaft? I took the valve cover off and checked the timing chain but it was ok. Now not sure which way to go?

If its spinning fasted than usual it means no compression. With the timing cover off put wrench on the crank pully bolt and rotate the engine checking that the cam shaft turns.

See what a compression check tells you, and go from there.

There are a few visual checks you can do. Check for oil in the coolant and vice-versa. Also, after cranking the engine with the starter, remove the coolant pressure cap and sniff carefully. If you detect the odor of raw fuel, you’re probably looking at a head gasket change, at the very least.
