On Toyota V6 engines with VVT-I, there can be a costly repair caused by sticky VVT solenoid.
It throws VVT code, and then car goes into Dairy Queen hands that milk the owner.
There is simple maintenance job that can prevent this or fix the code.
Solenoids are located on the transmission side of V6 engines, like my wife’s RX300 3.0L. They are right below the valve cover, one per each bank, and are easy access. Single bolt removed, and solenoid can be taken out and spray cleaned with say carb cleaner.
Now, more interestingly, right below solenoid attachment, there is a single bolt head cap, securing in place metal mesh filter for that solenoid. Filter gets clogged, oil pressure into solenoid drops down, VVT malfunction code pops on the OBD2 port.
Takes a minute to CAREFULLY pull filter out, spray clean, and re insert back. Just be very careful with plstic clips on it, they break down very easy.
