enough of that yes it was copied and pastedi decided to make this post about everything i learned in the class notes wise ( we take notes everyday)
so if any of you guys don’t know what a technical term is called you can reference my notes in class i cant promise that they are 100% because there’s always that human error but i don’t know about you guys but i actually like reading about technical stuff like tool names and procedures or abbreviations for stuff so feel free to check out my notes i will be adding on as the days go by i will do my best to post new notes everyday anything from procedures, tool usage names , measurements, abbreviations , tool safety, shop safety, ect enjoy and hopefully you guys can read my story and maybe even for the regular DIY hopefully they can learn something new 🙂
( sorry for the type o’s i use notepad on my iPad when im taking notes in the lectures i don’t have a Microsoft account to use word on my iPad or else i would auto correct it please if you have anything to add on to what i wrote feel free to voice your opinion! everyone’s opinion counts! please note most of this stuff is Toyota related because it is a program offered by Toyota if i posted this in the wrong section of the forums please move it sorry :p i hope that once my 2 years are done i could come back and read over all the class notes and just remember my journey to be a master diagnostics technician i will also update this when something new goes on the dealership like pay rate good and bad things and mess ups and what not! -

Chapter 1 the automobile notes mr.williams
8/19/14Part = smallest changeable item in a vehicle cannot be dissembled a belt is a part a windshield is a part a belt is a part
Electrical or electronic parts are gotten called components
Assembly
Set of fitted parts designed to complete a function
The engine is a assembly that converts fuel into usable power to move he vehicle
Technicians take assemblies apart and put them back together during maintenance service and repair operationsSystem group of related parts and assemblies that performs a specific job
Steering system is comprised of the steering wheel gears swivel joins and other parts
Allows the driver to turn the wheels when maneuvering the vehicleMajor vehicle systems
Way vehicles are else mobiles
Body
Made of steel aluminum fiberglass lass plastic or composite materials
Forums the outside of the vehicle
Chassis
consists of hour vehicles frame and everything attached to it except the body includes the tires wheels engine transmission drive axle assembly
Frame
Main metal structure that the parts connect to to make the chassis2 main ways to design a vehicle body over a frame construction
The body bolts to a thick steel frame also called full frame vehicleCalled full frame because it goes from bumper to bumper mostly found in trucks vans and luxury cars super strong and rigid yo u get a firm ride because it can handle weight it does not torque or twist only problem I s that it’s heavy
Uni-body car
Pretty much the most common way a vehicle is build now the uni-body has the frame built into the body most passenger cars are this design the frame does not go bumper to bumper one thing that changed with vehicles that made uni-body possible is because back then they had rwd car now they are now mostly fwd the cradle is the support that holds the engine and transmissionChassis stiffness
Measured in HZ( hertz) (sounds frequency)
The stiffer the chassis the smoother the rideReally important word
CAFE is the cooperate average fuel economy ( all of the manufactures cars)Body types
Sedan uses front and rear doors and a separate rear compartment
A,b,c pillars in order from front to middle to bank a,b,c
The location of a part in a vehicle is always given from the drivers seat perspective facing forward
Convertibles have the top that can be removed or lowered and usually has a reinforced A pillar
Hatchback a large rear door to access the rear compartment and the storage compartment can be accessed from the rear seats
Stationed wagon similar to a hatchback but with a larger storage area
Minivan similar interior storage as a station wagon but on a higher platform
Sport utility vehicle ( SUV) gave the confirm of the car but is built on. The chassis of a truck started tot a me off late 80s early 90s
Coupe a 2 door version of a sedan May or may not have rear seatsLongitudinal engine is mounted in front to rear direction
Transverse engine is mounted sideways in the vehicle
Most common cars have transverse engine mounting
Front engine rear wheel drives
Drive shaft also known as a Torque tube
Google “what is a crossover”Engine
Engines main purpose is to convert chemical energy into mechanical energy
The heat causes gas expansion crating pressure
Most automobile engines use a four stroke cycle
Four stroke cycle perfect burn 14.7 to 1 ————–
Four separate piston strokes are needed to produce one cycle
1 Intake stroke the piston is moving downwards and the intake valve is open the exhaust valve is closed
2 compression stroke both valves are closed and the piston is moving up
3 power stroke both valves closed ignite air to fuel mixture as it burns it crates heat and the air expands moving the piston downwards power stroke uses all 4 steps it crates the power for the engine the other 3 strokes use it
The exhaust stroke intake valve is closed and the exhaust valve is open forcing the gases into the exhaust
Combustion is a slow controlled burnFirst way to describe a engine is by the cylinders
The second is what type of ignition system
Spark ignition or compression ignition
Gasoline engines use a spark ignition diesel engines use compression
Cylinder orientation or design how the cylinders are arranged
We have inline engines were the cylinders are in a row
Another way of describing it is displacement
Could be measured in cubic inches or liters
Induction type : how the air gets into the engine
Naturally aspirated means the engine draws air via vacuum
Forced induction the engine has a turbo or supercharger that forces air into the engine
Fuel system is how the fuel is sprayed into the engine
Carbureted engines also used a vacuum
Throttle body injectors “TBI” sprayed the fuel instead of waiting for the vacuum
Port injected : individual injector for each cylinder mounted by the intake port “near intake valve”
Basic computer systems in the car
Sensors used for inputs in the computer
Sensors input devices that can produce or modify electrical signals with changes in a condition such as motion temperature or pressure
Control module computers that uses signals from input devices to control various output devices
First one is ECM ” engine control module ” it uses input from the sensors to control engine operation
Second one is PCM “power train control module” controls the engine and the transmission works as 1 unit
Third one is TCM ” transmission control module” talks to the ECM but only controls the transmission
Another one is a BCM ” body control module ” usually used to control accessories systems (ac,radio,”cruise control)Actuators : device that performs the output that the computer commanded
Emission control system
Reduce the amount of toxic substances produces by an engine
Prevent fuel vapor from entering the atmosphere
Remove unburied and partially burned fuel from the engine exhaust ” co,nox,hoc,co2Drive train system
Cvt transmissions “constant velocity transmission”August 28, 2014 at 5:55 am #625885Chapter 2 notes 8/20/14
Carriers in the automotive service industryThe need for techs is on the rise!
The goal is to keep the vehicle through the life of the customer
Basic warranty basic covers first 3 years 36k miles and covers bumper to bumper warranty ( covers all the items in a vehicle for 3 years or 36k miles which ever comes first! Usually the items not covered are tires and brakes only it more it’s not covered if it’s abused
Emissions warranties:usually extends 5 years 70k-100k miles emissions warranty usually covers items like the oxygen censor or the catalytic converter and other devices that help control emissions
Extended warranty is provided by the manufacture and is usually added to the price of the vehicle at purchase
Aftermarket warranty offered by company’s other then the manufacture
Technician work sites
All these things come into play in the dealership
Most professional , most reliable
All the technicians service providers all have to do training either be online training or offsite training technicians have to meet minimum standards
Independent shops
Pep boys sears tire kingdom tires plus
Works on loll manufactures but are usually limited on access to updated information and cannot do factory warranty work
Mass merchandiser/aftermarket suppliers ( Sears,Goodyear,Firestone,Napa)
By the time your 40 you don’t want to be turning wrenches
Specialty shops, focus on one area of the vehicle (ac shops,tire-shops)
Fleet shops: usually provide basic maintenance for company vehicles
Technician job classification :
Lube tech(quick service technician) usually the entry level technician
New car prep: PDI “pre delivery inspection”
General service technician”light line technician” does maintenance and light repairs
Specialty technician focuses on one area of the vehicle common specialty areas were transmissions, engines, trim, and sometimes the front end specialist
— the way dealerships are setup “SW” service writers
Negative to a dispatcher system is the service writers have to communicate to all of the techs and the technicians need to communicate to different service writers another negative is that there is lots of favoritism
— team system
Positive things : quick lines of communication “a lot faster”
Negative things : if the service writer is out there is little of jobs for technician
If a technician is out limits the amount of cars that they an do ,if you have a bad service writer then it cost you money
Some team systems uses team leader
Technician team leader is usually the most experience technician in the team. And helps the technicians if they have trouble with a vehicle team leader helps technicians with their jobs
—- some team systems share hours in the team they add up all the technicians hours and divide them equally among them
— flat rate system; is getting paid by the job one set time regardless of how long it takes you
—back flag 🙁 = when the dealership takes money back for a job because the job was done incorrectly by the technician
—- SPIF- ( good )sales person incentive fund
— CSI– (. Customer service index) is the feed back system dealers use to check customer satisfaction
Shopforeman is in charge of maintaining the shop and supervising the technicians
Service advisor aka service writer is the person that documents the customers complaint and communicates the technicians findings with the customers
–service manager is in charge of the shop the technicians and the service writers
—parts counter person— the front counter person deals with the customers the back parts person deals with technician
Parts manager is in charge of the parts department guys and the parts store
–service director is in charge of service and parts department
Other carrier in the automotive industry
Sables representative for tools and equipment technical trainer technical school instructorsAugust 28, 2014 at 5:55 am #625887Chapter 3 notes 8/21/14
Starting a carter in the automotive industryDesire and interest not a hobby but it is a carrier computer and hands on skills needed
-job shadowing: we go to the dealership and work with a tech
-programs that are around ( Chrysler CAP,Toyota T-TEN,BMW STEP )
-soft skills; basic communication skills. And working together
Most systems are team systems , soft skills are also working alone able to lead or supervise be realistic about there skill level and trustworthiness always answer honestly
-follow up call is usually 2 or 3 days after the interview during the call ask “is there anything I can do to speed up the processAugust 28, 2014 at 5:58 am #625888Chapter 4 notes 8/21/14
Professionalism
Practice consistency,keep your word,develop technical expertise,be accountable
Ethics; set principles that govern conduct, ask your self is it legal? Would I be upset if someone did this to me,would others find my behavior correct?
Listing ability to hear and understand what is being said, takes practice and dedication must be continuously developed
Listening stop talking to hear the speaker talking using two words and terminology listeners understand make appropriate eye contact be sensitive to cultural difference to cultural differences Nonverbal communication tone and inflection of voice facial expressions, posture
— what happens on the first day
show up on time!!!!, shop owner or foreman should introduce new technician to key people and show new technician the facility , ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION,ask technician about skills and talents, review training tasks, direct work to technician that covers new training material, smile more
–three c’s or ( CCR)
customer complaint (what the customers complaint is )
Cause ( what caused it )
Correction ( what did you do to fix it )
MAIN JOB
Fix customers complaint , work cleanly and neatly, nothing posses off a customer off then seeing a grease mark on the steering wheel or armrest
Porters = car Jockies, you will learn bad habits at the dealer in class you will learn the proper way of doing things
Torque specs is the tightness a bolt or but should be tight too
Customer pay (cp)
When a repair completed place sticker on work order
-R&R (remove and replace)
R&I (remove and inspect)
New versus re-manufactured parts new parts have never been used on a vehicle re-manufactured(rebuilt) component had been used on a vehicle
Self management maintain professional appearance at all times , make sure your uniform is clean before working on another vehicle always have shirt tail tucked in Job evaluation follow instructions keep a neat and clan app for ask that work be checkAugust 28, 2014 at 5:58 am #625891Chapter 5 notes 8/25/14 technician certification
ASE ( automotive service excellence) have been recognized as the industry credential for the last 40 years ASE certification last 5 years there 8 basic automotive areas
A1 engine repair
A2 automatic transmission/transaxle
A3 manual all drive and axles
A4 suspension and steering
A5 brakes
A6 electrical / electronics
A7 heating and air conditioning
A8 engine performance
Have to have A8 to take L1 ( advanced performance)
School can count up too 1 year of experience
Not ASE certified until 2 years expire nice is done
ASE have between 40-60 questions depending on the area
The test are given online at designated testing sites
Most questions are gm related ( General Motors)
Key: correct awnser distract ores: incorrect awnsers
What type of questions are asked on the ASE
1) multiple choice
1 or 2 distractions are completely incorrect
The third distractor could be possible there’s only 1 right awnser
2) technician A technician B : treat each question as their own do not compare
3) most likely less likely do not over think the question do not create senerios just to make a awnser wrong
4) excerpt questionsAugust 28, 2014 at 5:59 am #625895Chapter 6 notes 8/25/14
PPE ( personal protective equipment
Bend with your knees not your back, carbon dioxide no tools on the floor
Disassembly is just as important to assembly
How to jump start a car anytime you deal with electrical you disconnect the negative first and reconnect it last
Both cars off
Connect the positive to the dead battery then connect the positive to the good battery then connect the negative cable from the good battery to a ground in the stalled car
Fire extinguisher
Class c is used for electrical fires
Class d is effective only on cp,bust ingle metals
PASS Point aim squeeze sweep
Fire blanket get blanket out and throw it outAugust 28, 2014 at 5:59 am #625897Chapter 7 8/26/14
Environmental hazardous materials
Definition: chemicals or components that pose a danger to the environment and people if not disposed of properly
Terms to be familiar with
Personal protected equipment ( PPE)
Occupational safety and health act ( OSHA) law providing safe and healthy working conditions
Environmental protection agency ( EPA) the EPA publishes a list of hazardous material included in the code of federal regulations ( CFR) by federal law employees have the right to know if employes will be exposed
MSDS : material safety data sheet contains information Ina product such as boiling point the flashpoint (temperature it starts to burn) the ingredients safety precautions procedures of inhaled or digested storage recommendations and other safety informations all msds must be accessible for any employee
Resource conservation and recovery act ( RCRA ) controls the disposal of hazardous waiste
HEPA filter ( high efficiency particulate air vacuum ) cleans very fine air particles of dust
Disposing brake fluid is hygroscopic it absorbs moisture
1 gallon of oil can make 1 million of freshwater undrinkable
Chemical poisoning you could die
Hazardous solvents and regulatory
Dot department of transportation regulated materials used in vehicles
When caring a airbag carry it with the airbag facing away from you
Used tire disposal
Environmental concern used tires present a fore hazard and when burned crate a large a,mount of black smoke that contaminates the airAugust 28, 2014 at 6:00 am #625899Chapter 8
Thread size
Standard bolts
Unf : united national fine
Pitch: how many threads per inch
Unc= stander bolt
Tpi: threads per inch
Terminology: cap screws,bolts,studs,crest
Major diameter is the measurements on the tip of the treads
Minor diameter the grove on the smear part of the threads
Major diameter-pitch-length when asking for a bolt
When measureing a metric bolt the measurements are given in MM (miameters) and the tread pitch is the distance between the top
If it has lines it’s standerd if it has numbers it’s metric
Strength is the grade of the bolt
Tensile strength is the same as bolt strength and grade
The higher the number or the number of lines the higher the number the stronger the boltUNC-unified fine
Metric system ( M12-1.75 x 25 boltSi: standerd international
Standerd bolt
3-4-10unc-2ax1 3/4
3/4- thread diameter & bolt size
Some bolts have left handed threads they usually have a L on themAugust 28, 2014 at 6:00 am #625901Chapter 9 notes 8/26/14
Wrenches used to tighten or loosen a bolt or nut
Different type of wrenches
Opened-end wrench open on both ends each end is approx 2 sizes apart if the ends are different angles or different styles they will usually be the same size
Boxed end wrench- is a closed on both sides you wanna try to use a boxed end wrench over a opened end which will flex enough to damage the nut
(Offset: ends of the wrench are at a angle for Clarence)
Combination wrench: has a opens end and a boxed end on the other that are the same size opening
(Stubby: shortened version of the tool Ex: stubby combination wrench)
Line wrench: (specialty tool) similar to boxed end wrench with a small notch cut in both ends to allow to slide over pipes
Boxed end RATCHENING wrench: a boxed end wrench that allows for a ratching motion which allows for a faster removal of the nut or bolt
Adjustable wrench:allows the technician to change the size of the opening only use it if you have too
Ratchets and sockets
Sockets: different way to describe sockets
1)Drive size: is the with of the opening in the back of the socket were the ratchet of extension connects *3 main drive sizes: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2*
1/4 drive sockets usually range 4-15mm for light torque applications
3/8 drive sockets usually range 7-19mm for medium torque applications
1/2 drive sockets usually range 12-36mm for heavy duty applications
2) 6 point or 12 point sockets these are the most common openings
3) chrome or impact
Impact: usually are 6 point and have thicket walls then chrome sockets
Chrome: have thin sidewalls
4) standard or metric ( describing the size of the opening)
Until recently metric sets were identified by lines around the base of the socket
5) how deep the socket is ( deep or shallow sizes)
*****************Use a shallow socket when ever possible ************
Specialty socket: crows foot socket , spark plug socket: deep socket with a rubber insert to hold the spark plug when removing or installing O2 socket (oxygen sensor) has a notch cut out the side for the oxygen sensors wires
Socket drivers ( ratchets)
Socket drivers ratchet: allows the technician to turn the socket in one direction and freely on the other ( different variation handle length, drive size, head shape, head flexibility, angle of handle, and the number of teeth on the internal gear the more teeth the less movement needed for ratcheting action
Braker bar: used when extreme torque is necessary to loosen the bolt
Speed handle: Google
Torque wrench allows to tight the bolt to the specified tightness
3 common type torque wrenches
1) beam type torque wrench: must look directly in front to read and does not ratchet
2) dial type torque wrench: do not ratchet and you must look at it
3) a click type torque wrench: you can preset what torque you want it give you a audible and sensory feel to when you have achieved torque spec
CLICK TYPE TORQUE WRENCH SHOULD ALWAYS BE STORED IN THE LOWEST SETTING
Torque stick: is made from spring metal and is used to prevent over tightening of the lug nuts only used with impact guns
Screw driver
Made by Henry f Philip
Flatheads come in different sizes
Philip screw drivers come in different sizes 1,2,3 solid screw drivers are the best
Impact screw driver:is used to remove frozen screws
Torx bit: we’re specialty tool before
Tamper proof torque bits have a hole in the center to fit over the dimple in the screw
Torxbit sizes do not go in order one after the other
Allen wrench/key: 6 point comes in standerd and metric torxs only comes in “T” sizes if a socket has a E is used in inverted torx screws
Pry-bar is the equivalent to a braker bar used for leverage
Hammers
1) ball-peen hammer : flat surface on one side and a curved surface on the other
2) mallets: rubber mallet used to prevent damage to the object
3) dead blow hammer is filled with lead shot or sand to prevent recoil
4) plastic tip mallets have replaceable tips in am any shapes and sizes
5) brass tip mallet used to prevent not damage to the surface and prevent sparks
104 is the starting of the spin number
Pliers
Slip join pliers: have a adjustable pivot point to adjust the size of the opening
Rib joint pliers:have grooves in them that look like ribs
Diagonal cutters:pliers with sharp edges usually used to cut wires
Needle nose pliers: have a pointy tip to reach into small areas
Locking pliers: should only be used to loosen the bolt if it is damaged to much for a socket
Snapping pliers:specialty pliers used for internal and external snap rings
******
1) keep the heavier items in the lower drawer
2) Do not open more then a drawer at a time
3) there’s a place for every tool and every tool has its place
4) if you have to borrow a tool twice BUY YOUR OWN
5) clean your tools after each useAugust 28, 2014 at 6:07 am #625907Welcome Juan!
Congrats on starting the program! Neat of you to post all the stuff… Hope you keep it up… Can give insight into what is involved with becoming a tech!
Cheers!

August 28, 2014 at 6:29 am #625961update 8/27/14
i have a low “B” in the class because i got a 50-70% in a couple quizzes because i did not study but now im getting the hang of it and im doing good last test i did today i got 4 questions wrong out of 31 which is not bad so far in the class we have a quiz every single day on the notes that we take i drive a hour and a half to class everyday Monday- Thursday to get to class at 7 am i leave my house at 5.30am the class ends at 2.00pm – 2.15pm depending on how busy we are i usually get home at 3.30pm and go to sleep at 8pm or else i would die falling sleep behind the wheel my teacher seems harsh and mean but hes just being honest with you he doesn’t like it when your late to class because it shows that your not dependable but that’s normal because the stricter he is the more serious you take the class we started out the class with 34 students and currently we are down to 27 the other guys have dropped out and left the instructor says by the first year we should have about 17 students which i kinda believe him failing the class is really easy if you don’t study another interesting thing i found out was that the instructors quizzes are not multiple choice which makes it allot harder because you have to remember the term or the definition recently he gave us a quiz that said “read entire test before starting” and at the very bottom it said ” now wave to mr. williams and start your test” and no one did that so everyone got a 0% for not following directions hes real big on following directions you must have your shirt tucked in or else he will call your attention in front of class overall i really enjoy TTEN because i really do like this carrier and i can see me doing this 5-30 years from now one thing that really motivated me to go to collage is working minimum wage jobs like MacDonalds is no way to live.. when you make 7.70$ an hour might as well sell water bottles on the side of the road i used to work at “regal cinemas” as a usher and i was paid 7.79 then bumped up to 8.25$ per hour and i got paid bi-weekly and usually the paychecks were 200-300$ every two weeks and about 100-130$ went to gas and food and it was just no way to live im not afraid to say i got fired from regal because i could not show up to work one day i even called 3 hours ahead and it was my third strike ( first was coming in late by 12 minutes , second was not saying “hi welcome to regal” to a guest i said ” hi your theater 12 is on the left” instead of “hi welcome to regal your theater 12 is on the left” to EVERY CUSTOMER and i was given my second strike for that and then the third was not being able to go to work one day but anyways i understand what they did was right but i did feel bad because i was one of the few employees that actually cleaned the theater and actually checked theaters and i would go above and beyond what i had to do and they just let me go on Christmas day yup… ofcourse once the shift was over enough of that i don’t mind because they opened the doors to my new carrier in automotive ive always liked taking things apart and putting them back together or fixing them its such a good feeling you get and when i turned 18 i bought a 2007 scion tc which i modified and put little things here and there ive done most of the stuff my self besides specialty jobs like alignments tire removal ect .
oh i was pulled over for “a aftermarket exhaust” and he gave me a warning for that but then he asked me to put my windows up so i did and then he took out his window tint meter and gave me a 135$ window tint ticket… yes i knew i had illegal tints 5% ( were i live in Florida legal is 28% on the front)which made me really mad because i don’t smoke i don’t drink i pay collage class out of pocket i didn’t speed or HAVE MY WINDOWS UP they were down with my sunroof opened a state trooper is the one that gave me the ticket before i put the windows up i told him “i know the tints are to dark i have them that way for when i go to car shows the car looks good that’s why i don’t drive with the windows up and when it rains if i go past 40mph the rain does not get in the car do to the aerodynamics he said it doesn’t matter and continued to tint me i asked him if he was allowed to tell me to put up my windows and he said “yes they are against the law” so i had no choice but to take the ticket which i haven’t payed off because i simply don’t have the money to pay them specially when i have to buy impact 1/2 drive gun , impact sockets, lug nut sockets, torque wrench, rolling tool box , pliers set and many more “intro” tools or general tools that will cost me about 1-2,000$ and pay for collage out of pocket i did buy 30% window tint and i will be replacing the tint so i will not get a ticket again as of now i don’t know what im going to do with the ticket so im just holding it off until i have the money for it i will be uploading the tickets with censored information just so you guys can see what im experiencing lol that’s why im doing this in the first place so you guys can see the daily life of a student wanting to become a master tech and hopefully you guys can be with me thew out the ups and downs 😛
hopefully any info i post has helped you or teached you something you were not familiar with 🙂
8/24/14 , 10.29pmAugust 28, 2014 at 7:50 am #626009Juan, welcome to the board and to the world of automotive service…
Good of you to share this information, really it can help others see what is involved with the training program…
Take care and hope you keep posting this info…
