Hi, I have Toyota Avensis 1997 2l TD (do you even have these in USA? :)) Bought it about 6 months ago, there was no blue smoke at that point. Couple of months back I noticed some blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. There is no other signs of blown gasket or bad rings (oil in coolant or coolant in oil, steam coming out of fill cap, cooling hoses getting hard, none of this). So since there seems to be nothing wrong with the engine I suspect turbo. Problem is I dont know much about turbos (other than how they work) and how to diagnose them. Any ideas or good sources of info on diesels? Also if you wondering how much oil it burns, I changed oil about 1000miles ago ant its still on top.
Dont know if it could be related, but I seem to be loosing some coolant too, however previous owner (who I know well) said that inside heater might be leaking, but I dont find any evidence of that (windows dont get foggy, carpet is dry). Thanks for help!

It dosen’t sound like it is using much oil. Could it be unburned fuel account lower than optimum compression. The evaporator and heater core both reside in the heater box which has an external drain hose near the bottom of the passenger compartment so any leak might not show inside the car. I believe the turbo only uses oil for lube and cooling not antifreze. Keep an eye on the oil and coolant for mixing and test the coolant for the presence of combustion gases to prove the head gasket condition.

Thanks for reply! I think we can rule out low compression, as car starts at -20C with no problem what so ever. Will look for block tester, might take a while. Cant turbo be burning oil? It uses it for lubrication, could it be leaking to the exhaust part of turbo where it would burn due to high temp? Or is this theory total nonsense? 🙂

I think the turbo burning oil is the most likely cause but by the sound of it it doesn’t sound like you’re burning that much oil. If that’s the case I would chalk it up to normal operation for such an old vehicle and move on. Try not to create problems where there aren’t any. If you were going through a quart of oil every 1K then I’d be concerned but a little blue smoke on start up with an engine that old is normal and I don’t think it’s worth worrying about.
