Toyota 4Runner Mystery

So I bought my 1999 Toyota 4Runner 4×4 with limited edition trim, about a month ago, and I love it. I got a good deal for the price. However I noticed two things after I had it bought. I find a set of tubes near the fire wall with nothing attached and two more about 10ish inches way that look like where a hose would connect them all, that are plugged. I could just put some hoses on them, but I thought I should get a second opinion on it just to be safe. I don’t know if the plugs are a benefit to the engine or a lazy mechanic’s band-aid fix. (Its not real hard to put vacuum hoses on.) I have no idea why either the previous owner, or the dealer where I bought it put them there. Any thoughts? See pics below..

Well Brad, that is for the remote blinker fluid resivior. If you install new double ended muffler bearings, you will need to get these reconnected asap or risk the reversion effect and overload the flux capacitor. Be careful buddy!

They could be blocked off from the manufacture as in they were not used for that specific vehicles emission system or what your original post stated. There should be a vacuum routing tag under the hood detailing the vacuum system for the vehicle.

I would guess that they are the evaporative emission lines that vent fumes from the fuel tank. Those caps do not look factory.

I did an image search and found the pic underhood vacuum sticker that may be missing from yours. I also looked up 4runners near your year on eBay, then copied the pics of the engine bay. I see things there. If you need a tall person to look under the back of your intake, call before you head out of town.

                    OK,

A lot of wierdness in this thread. Like a game of balderdash…

                    First, the URANUS… LOL

Second, the vacuum diagram of a Mitsubishi engine being posted 🙂 … must be an inside joke…

OK. From the looks of that throttle body, This looks to me to be a 5VZ-FE Engine (3.4L)

The first picture (Two tubes on the firewall) – These go to the rear heater core…. Someone must have gotten sick of it leaking someplace.

The second picture shows the where the Throttle body EGR vacuum lines used to be hooked up on older model 3.4’s. The plugs are correct. That is the way it should be…

                    Cheers!

                    -Karl

pics of what it should look like…
