I have a 2005 Pontiac Montana w/ 153,000 miles. I purchased 2 years ago with 113,000 miles. The van is my daily driver, and I also use it to tow my track day motorcycle 4-5 times a year, about 500 miles each trip. The bike weighs about 375 pounds, and my little Yacht Club trailer weighs 330 pounds, so about 750 pounds total including extra gear.

(There’s also been a couple instances where I’ve towed 2 bikes–mine and my wife’s–to the Black Hills, so that would be about 1200 pounds total. But that’s only happened twice.)

I don’t know the service history of the van before I bought it, but it certainly appeared downright impeccable. The van has performed flawlessly the entire time I’ve owned it.

So, my question is: Do I need a transmission service/fluid change/flush? The service manual says to change the ATF fluid every 50k miles for “certain conditions” including “frequent towing”, “delivery service”, etc. Otherwise, under normal conditions, change it every 100k miles. It doesn’t say anything about a transmission flush, except for flushing the transmission cooler.

GM transmission that needs ATF change ONLY every 100 000 miles? :woohoo: What is it, CVT?
Do not POWER flush it, that’s for sure, but you long term due for ATF changes that PERSONALLY I’d have had done at least every 30 000 miles.
You can easily “naturally” flush trannie by simply adding can of Transtune to it and driving on it for a week, then changing ATF drain’refill, drive for a day or 2, drain/refill, drive for a day or 2, drain>do filter>refill. Then you have entire ATF fluid changed. And trannie flushed from normal fluid circulation.

If you read the fine print, hardly any vehicle falls into the normal category, generally we all drive severe service. Severe service is hot or cold weather, stop and go driving, on and on. Normal service might be a guard vehicle for a semi with an oversize load.
