Lazy day with nothing to do, so i broke out the ol’ tool box, a box that once consisted of all new & shiny craftsman wrenches and sockets is now a collage of assorted craftsman, harbor freight, crescent, and “other.”

Q: how would you go about filling in the missing bits and pieces?

My current plan is to buy the 15 missing sockets cheap from autozone. the alternative would be to replace each craftsman socket at an amazing $5 or $6 bucks a piece.

Now that I think about it, I might dig through the toolboxes at the local pawn shop and see what I come up with.

I bought a complete Craftsman set about a year ago. Since then, I’ve bought a set of Duralast flare nut wrenches for a break job & some Harbor Freight stuff (pry bar, etc).

I’m looking to score a good deal on eBay for a Snap-on 3/8″ Dual 80.

I think that if you’re a weekend/shade tree mechanic like me, then cheaper stuff in a pinch is fine, but I’m always looking on Craigslist for a good deal on quality stuff.

Whenever I need odds or ends to fill the spot of a lost socket or wrench I turn to ebay. I buy used and cheap. My feeling is, if its guranteed for life who cares if its used. I’ve gotten lots of mac, snapon, and matco tols real cheap on ebay. The key is to be patient; the right deal will come at the right price.

I just got a set of SnapOn hex drivers for $80 at a local pawn shop. They list for $230. Quality can be had if you know where to look.

I would just get what you need from harbor freight if its sockets. I have lots of sockets from harbor freight and haven’t had any issues. They are nice high visibility to. Some people have had issues with wrenches though so I stay away from those. Oh and their screw drivers aren’t the most durable either. I would look at the reviews on the products you are looking on their website first before committing. I use all different brands, mostly craftsman when I can get them cheap or used. Just look at reviews or for use quality stuff and you can save some bucks big time.

By the way I just did the same thing and I have to replace some sockets and a few wrenches. Going to harbor freight for the sockets and sears for the wrenches.

              Good luck man.
