A couple of months ago I decided to buy a torque wrench from the tool truck. I used it on every car that came into my hands. Then a month goes by and I heard that I had a wheel off. I was lucky because I only broke one stud and the customer tightened his wheels down. Then a couple of weeks later almost the same thing happens but the customer came straight back in. I then quickly returned the torque wrench to the tool truck and I am now using a shop tool. I haven’t had the same problem yet. I was written up two times and put on probation.

Should I ask my manager to see if I could not be written up for buying a defective tool. Or do you think it is lost cause?

I bought a Gear Wrench torque wrench.

Can’t hurt to try and explain the predicament to the manager but I have found they don’t care about reasons for something as long as they have someone to hang the fault on. I don’t know where you are but in Canada we have the ministry of labor if an employer wrongly faults an employee and you suffer for it.
That said, a torque wrench is so important to be accurate we have them checked regularly and compare any new one to one known to be good. It doesn’t happen often but anything man made can be defective. How many brand new defective parts do we get for example.

          ^THIS!

Where i was working company and person torque wrenches must be tested before first time use in the shop by the company tool lab because of exactly what happened to you.

Since you didn’t really take the step to ensure the torque wrench was in full 100% working order there is nothing you can really do. Just be happy no one died. If someone had died and the issue was the wheel nuts not being torqued properly, it could lead to jail time for your information.
From now on ensure all your tools are in working order, don’t EVER assume.
