With the video on the last week’s FATR of the 24 cylinder 2 stroke engine I wanted to share a little knowledge about 2 stroke Diesels.
If you don’t know what I’m referring to, it was this video that Eric posted:

Ah the 2 stroke Diesel, also known as a Screamin’ Jimmy, Detroit Screamer, Detroit Leakster, a widely misunderstood concept. No you don’t put oil in the fuel and does it sound rare and exotic? I dunno have you ever noticed how many charter busses seem to have a really high idle compared to a diesel pickup?
Well they’re really not idling any faster they’re just firing twice as often.
So for beginners, how a 2 stroke diesel works.

Ok now you know how it works, lets learn a little the models.
In road vehicles Detroit Diesel had the 53 series, 71 series and 92 series. Each of these numbers was the displacement of a single cylinder in inches.
So here’s how you read the model numbers
3-53 – 3 Cylinders inline @ 53 cubic inches each
4-53T – 4 Cylinders inline @ 53 cubic inches each with a turbo
671 or 6-71 – 6 Cylinders inline @ 71 Cubic inches
8v92TT – 8 Cylinders in a V, 92 Cubic inches each, Twin TurboThe two largest engines you’ll see in a road vehicle are an 8v92 and a 12V71.
So on the low end, lets see what a 53 series sounds like. Also known as the most fuel efficient way to turn diesel fuel into noise.
This is a 353T, 159 Cubic inches of noise producing turbo charged fun.
At 3400RPM this thing sounds like a race car.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z16LFkBwYHQ
Now lets fly over to the other side of the spectrum, a 12V71TT

You can hear that signature loping idle that Detroit’s have. Most of these engines are completely mechanical with no electronics other than the starter. So the only thing out there to regulate the idle is pure physics.
One sad thing about these mechanical diesels is they can eat themselves to death as well. If you have a bad ring and oil seeps into the cylinder the engine will eat its own oil and keep running after you cut off the fuel until it seizes up unless you can somehow cut off the air.
Here’s a 12V71 without a turbo going down the road.

Now we go up in displacement to a 92 series. Here’s an 8v92, you can hear the deeper throat to the 92 series.

And to round things out a 453T with 2 shifters and a Jake brake. They say the best way to drive a Detroit 2 Stroke is to slam your hand in the door and drive it like you’re pissed.

Just gotta keep that pedal planted.
I would guess truckers of that era had a severly tanned left arm and a Popeye arm on the right from all that shifting.
Bonus!
A pair 1-71’s!

A 10,000 Watt generator!
Second Bonus! (Sorry, couldn’t help it!)
A 16V149!

Can you tell I really love the sound of these engines?!
