About a month ago I began to notice my front brakes shaking when they are applied while traveling above 65 mph. I had the pads replaced about 6 months ago, but the rotors were neither replaced nor resurfaced at the time. So anyway I’m curious if this shaking could be causing some weird tire wear I have noticed.

The front tires are getting close to their tread depth indicators, but most recently I have noticed rather small tears or “nicks” on the outer edges of the tread pattern. I wondering if this is normal because the tires are getting more worn, or a result of the brakes shaking. I can post a picture tomorrow.

I’ll be getting my oil changed tomorrow and I’ll consult the technician at the shop about this (since I’m sure they’ll love to sell me some tires down the road). So has anyone ever see this sort of cause and effect?

Car is a 2003 Honda Accord I4 5MT with 150,000 miles, has regular history of alignments.

With tires getting as low on the tread as you are describing, the small nicks and what not could possibly be age related. You may be in a climate that dry rot on tires could be an issue.

I do not believe the brakes would cause any unusual wear like you are describing – though when you change your pads next, I would recommend new rotors as well, to prevent any issues with your braking system. Resurfacing rotors costs nearly as much as a new rotor. Resurfacing also has the possibility of setting the rotor our of balance depending on if they resurface the rotors correctly or not.

Although the tires are probably due for replacement, the shaking is most likely caused from warped or out-of-round rotors. When changing pads, the rotors should generally always be resurfaced or replaced.

Shuddering brakes do not necessarily mean the problem has a root cause in the brakes. Replacing pads only and not servicing the rotors is an improper repair by the way.

The description of the tire wear sounds like feather edging and that is usually due to the alignment being out. The alignment could be out due to a worn suspension or steering component and feather edging is usually caused by incorrect toe.
A worn suspension or steering component can also cause a brake shudder and it’s quite common to assume because the car shudders when braking it’s due to the brakes themselves.

My suggestion is to jack the car up and determine if there is any slop at all in the wheels. That won’t answer any questions about alignment but it’s a start.
