I am a lube tire tech at a franchise business. I went to school and took steering, suspension and alignment. Also, I have work experience at another franchise. I watched the tire repair video that the school showed me and I do nothing what I am supposed to do with my new job. According to the Tire video I am supposed to not repair tires if they are on the outside tread. According to my supervisor I am allowed to repair a tire until I am on the edge of the sidewall. I said to my manager that is bull. I even asked the lead tech If he would fix it. he also agrees with me. I just dont want to be fighting with my managers about a saftey issue. So all I do is put on the paper work “Tech was told by supervisor to fix tire.” Do I just keep arguing with my managers about it or do I just shut my mouth and take the paycheck?

I think I would put “Attempted repair under protest.” on the work order to CYA. That way it shouldn’t be able to come back and bite you.

Just CYA, while at my dealership, the SM and SA always takes my recommendation (never repair on the outside tread or sidewall), if I was ever told to do something that I know not to be safe or disagree with, I add it to my story notes to CYA. This is what I would put.

“Advised that tire cannot safely be repaired. Manager requested I repair it anyway.”

That removes the liability from you and puts it on the manager/company. If something happens from it, the company will learn the expensive lesson, and you can continue to earn a paycheck while you find a new job.
