Back in the day, farm trucks and other old crappy equipment had tires that could be changed in the field. (Yes, on the farm I had some of this junk, believe it not) These country vehicle class used what was called a Split Rim. Even utter those word around tire shops now and they show you the door, needless to say, check out some Youtube videos on it. That is probably what happend in the article, somebody messing with a split rim when they were not equipped with a cage, say like Industrial semi tire places or something more serious than Discount Tire or Kmart may have. Youtube split rims, there are some real interesting videos.

This was a sears auto Center so we are talking about a Fleet or consumer vehicle. The equipment used was an industrial tire changer.

I have a review of my tire changer coming in the not too distant future. We shot it before I went on break. I didn’t cover fix a flat when I did the review, but I will touch on it at some point in the future. I actually know someone who was injured in just such an incident. I’ve never been a fan of fix a flat and after meeting the person I mentioned, I’m defiantly not a fan.

          Thanks for the suggestion.
