You don’t have to remove anything else, just the 2 bolts that hold the tensioner in. There’s an o-ring that has failed and is causing the leak so you can either replace the o-ring or the whole tensioner. I believe Toyota only sells the whole assembly.
When you remove it, pay attention to which side the ‘hook’ is on so you don’t get it backwards on re-install.
This is how to do it (I believe the engines should be the same from ’98-07):
Thanks for the info. I will probably buy the tensioner assembly. I called the local parts store today and they do not sell just the O-Ring. I will check out the video link tonight.
It’s advise that you don’t use the gasket material extra on the tensioner. If it gets old and into the engine, it’s not good. It could clog up the oil lube path. Just install the new tensioner and the o ring will do it’s job. The leak is common and very bad design. I changed mine less than 10000 miles ago and it leaks again. Here’s another link to the replacement. http://www.corolland.com/forums/index.p … ioner-diy/
Easy work. In the thread, the guy replaced the valve cover as well. You don’t have to remove the valve cover. You just need good hearing to listen to the zip sound when the tensioner is released.
