      Hey Guys,
We have a 1999 Grand Vitara with a V6. We bought it a couple years ago from the estate of grandmother whom was the original owner. It had 82K on it at the time. Over the last two years, we’ve only put another 7000 miles on it. It makes a terrible grinding noise. I guess it’s been looked at by grandma’s family a few times, but never fixed. I’ve recently been told by a shade tree that these are known to have a timing chain that will grind.

Anyone hear of this? Is there an easy check? Easy fix?

Timing chain guides could be worn out but we need more information. Does it grind all the time? Does it grind when you are sitting in park or driving?

have moved this to service repair questions.

do you have a video of the noise its making, we can better give you an idea of what it might be if we can hear it 🙂

It was making it 24/7, and then I saw flakes of metal in the oil.

So, I did a full disclosure sale. Told the guy exactly what I thought it was. He acted/talked like he knew all about them. I discounted it heavily (for just a bit more than scrap), and we’re all happy.
