I have a 1996 f150. I am replaceing timing chain. I have remove the cover and replaced timing chain. However directions say to cut the gasket on oil pan even with block. problem is gasket is metal sandwhiched in between rubber. The rubber torn to bad to use – do i need to drop oil pan or can i just put silicone on both sides of metal potion of gasket. then put timing cover on.

Silicone it if you want to get it on the road. Replace the pan gasket if you want to be a perfectionist.

i read what it takes to replace pan gasket-. Basically lift motor. Not sure my pump bolt will hold so might as well rig that too. Any preference for silicone to do this with.

          Thanks for your replay.

For the pan, I’d use a high-temp gray RTV. I’m not too picky about brand. As for sealing bolt threads, you should use Permatex High-Temp thread sealant. In my opinion, RTV isn’t really the right product for sealing threads.
