Hey ETCG! I bought your video on changing timing belts and it was excellent. I do have a suggestion on something that was missing from it, which would help and an issue i ran into. Also tell me what the spec would be when setting the timing marks and one of the marks doesnt line up exactly after you put the new belt on?? The last one i did the crank shaft mark was 1/2 a tooth off, almost dead on but just a little? How much do you consider within spec?????

My answer to your question is everything should line up dead on. A tooth off can cause performance issues.

??Dont know college ,man. If a cam is slightly off. 1/2 tooth after putting belt on. they dont always line up dead on.. Not sure about your answer. The last one i did, a volvo, the crank was less than half a tooth off. could not get it dead on. It runs perfectly, actually better than it ran before i changed the belt> Dead on doesnt work exactly every time. just wanted ETCG to give me his spec on it.. I knowi there shouldn;t be any play and to line them up. i have just had a couple that didnt line up exactly dead on. But sooooo close you could hardly notice.

Timing belts and chains never line up exactly. They are designed to be ‘hunting’. Meaning that they are designed so that the same teeth do not come into contact with the same gear with each revolution of the crankshaft. That’s the reason the timing is always slightly off when you install a belt or a chain. I actually cover that in Part 2 of the Nissan Timing chain series coming up in 2 weeks.

If you followed the procedures in the video you should be fine.
