I am not completely clear on what you are asking, so I will shotgun it.

If you replaced the tensioner, the new tensioner will come pre-loaded with a pin that you should simply pull as one of the last steps after the belt and everything has been replaced.

If you do not replace the tensioner with a new one (and you always should while you are in there). Then you need to put the old tensioner vertically in a press or vise and squeeze (push) the plunger back down and apply a pin into the small holes on the tensioner and the plunger to hold the tension. Remove it from the vise and now it is ready to re-install….. If you don’t have a pin, then a small Allen hex key/wrench that fits in the holes will suffice. Then re-install the tensioner and when the water pump, pulleys and belt have been replaced, then pull the allen wrench/pin. The tensioner plunger will push out and you will have your belt tension…Also it may be easier to use a set of pliers to to pull the allen key/wrench….

I get that I have to put the tensioner on and pull the pin but this tensioner doesn’t have a pin? at least to my knowledge it doesn’t seem to have a pin

You are right . . .there is no pin. Look for two tiny holes at the top of barrel where the tensioner shaft pushes out. Insert small diameter drill bit or tiny allen wrench (you need high strength steel rod for this as the tensioner will exert powerful force) into these two aligning holes. This holds the tensioner in place until you remove with pliers to tension your timing belt.

Good Luck and keep your nails Dirty!
