OK I’m wondering if this thing should be junked or if I should fix it… I’ve put a new tail light, alternator, timing belt, I’ve fixed a lot of the electrical issues in it, and prolli more. Here’s what it needs… A neutral safety switch, front lower ball joints, lots of electrical issues, new gas tank, brake work, new suspension, speedometer, alignment, tune-up, lots of body work, and to top it off the rear end is on its last legs it’s not freezing up but it is clicking and grinding and humming constantly. On the good side of things the engine and transmission are good and the frame is solid.

In MY PERSONAL OPINION the car is not worth anymore money. my reason being is that sure you could go ahead and invest alot into the needs it has that you described if you wanted to. but you may end up with transmission/engine problems at any time (like you said you do not have right now). How will you feel if that happens? especially if you put all that money into it. cant really make any calls on how safe the vehicle is without seeing it myself. but with its mileage and age. It would not suprise me at all if the vehicle was found to be very unsafe to drive. Ive seen/worked on cars a fraction of that age that should have been taken from the owners and not returned until critical repairs were made. If you are not sure. it would probably be a good idea to have a professional inspect the vehicle.

Ok. I have decided not to dump anymore money into it. For the time being I will not be taking my family in it it’s going to be strictly a commuter car due to the rear end. Thankfully I have a less than five mile drive to work each day. I really hate to say it but scrap price is $300 and I only paid $400 for the car.

Time for a new car. To much time and money. You will never get the money back out of the car.C8-)

How safe is it to keep driving it as it is? especially with the rear end going.

I knew a guy with an old Volvo 240 (awesome car really) that he used as a back up generator for his house, he use a water wheel in the creek near his house to power a generator. He still drove the car as it was in drivable condition but perhaps it might be food for thought for you.

Well my friends have an old 240 and the offered it to me as a parts car for $650. And a new differential for my car is $200 should I take this route or still just not even bother???

I really like the old Volvo’s as there easy to work on.

Didnt you just get the one you have a few months ago?

You would need to inspect this ‘parts car’ and see exactly what it needs. You could transfer the good parts from your current Volvo to the other. $650 seems rather high though. How many miles are on the engine?

There price went up to $750 and it has less than 200K on it. It has a bunch of electrical issues with it. When the said they now want $750 I said no. I will save the money up and junk mine and have $1100 for a better car. Yes I did just get this one a few months ago. When I got it none of theses issues were present aside from the alternator being junk. I just happened to get it just as it was about to start falling apart.

i really hate JUNKING cars if it still runs, i dont see why a few hundred bucks to fix it is such a bad idea. and i honestly doubt the car just started to die after you bought it. ive junked alot of cars for alot less n the past and im 100% against it now. if you go to a junk yard you wll pay up to 100 bucks per bumper 30 – 50 a door 50 for the hood. etc.if you want to get rid of it part t out on ebay. then junk it. thats what i would do

I’m with joescorpio, but if the money’s not there for repair, especially if you need the car then you may be better off junking it. Or just sell cheap to someone who will spend the money on it.

Bits keep falling off my car so at times I’m stuck with the same problem but I keep throwing money at it. The thing with me is I know which parts are new, what’s likely to go next, and more importantly, I’ve learned a lot about this particular engine. If I buy another used car, I’ll be completely in the dark and could end up worse off rather than better which is exactly what happened when I sold my Golf for the Mazda!

I would keep this but I have a three month old son and I can’t take him in it as if the rear end decides to lock up while he’s in it with me I would never be able to forgive my self especially if anything happened to him.. But I could try the ebay thing BUT I have a headlight for a different car that i can’t get rid of so I just can’t afford to have something sitting and rotting away in the yard. Where I plan to take it to they will be parting it out. It’s a huge yard with cars that are just for parts plus they’re well known so people are more likely to buy it from them than from me. Plus I’ll be getting $350 for it.

Sorry dude but the volvo needs to be laid to rest. No offense, but volvos are not known for their reliability, but more their unreliability. Too much of a money pit.

it actually seemed like it used to be a decent little car the past owners took great pride of ownership it was the second and third owners who treated it like garbage and when I happened to get it it was on it’s last legs. The engine, tranny, and frame are the only good things on the whole thing.

                                    Not reliable??
My old Volvo 740 with the 230F engine drove 1.6 million kilometres before i junked it, the engine was alright but i junked it because it was a taxi-car in its old life and rusted apart. (We are salting the roads like crazy in Norway)

My opinion is that you should drive the car until you dont feel safe anymore
