Ive watched a couple videos on this and had a question. One video the guy was using 2 wrenches one to turn the nut the other
to keep the inner tie rod from moving. The second video was from richpin off youtube and he just used an open end wrench with
a pipe on the jam nut.The car i would be doing this on is a 2003 Hyundai accent. The nut looks very tight. I was going to use a crow
foot attached to my breaker bar with a pipe. Which method would be the best to use?

Thanks, never done a tie rod before.

I would loosen the jam nut first, do what ever you gotta do to loosen it. Then after that remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end and separate it from the knuckle

The method I have always used was two adjustable wrenches.. one on the tie rod and the other on the jam nut. just turn the nut back 1/4 to 1/2 turn. The tie rod then should be rather easy to just back off at that point. make sure you compare the old one to the new one and see if they are the same length that way you will know if you will have a pretty good preliminary alignment. IF different in lengths then you have to compensate either way on the threads when installing the new tie rod. put a piece of tape on the back side of the jam nut to mark where the old one was. Then at this point from what you are asking:

Best one I have used would be the first one you mentioned: two wrenches.. one on the nut the other on the shaft to keep it from turning the inner tie rod. You don’t want to put a lot of stress on the inner tie rod. If the nut looks very tight then just soak it with penetrating oil of your choice and let it sit for a few minutes. It should make it easier for you to remove.

With that jam nut off you can just do the opposite of removal and you should be fine. screw on the new nut up to the tape and the tie rod up to the nut till it touches. After you install the castle nut and pin then tighten the jam nut. And as always make sure to get an alignment. Hope this helped. Good luck.

A+ on the above post. spray penetrating oil first on the
jamb nut. let soak 15min or so. before the tie rod gets
removed. you will need to measure where the old tie rod
was to get the new tie back close to the old position. what I
like to do is move the jam nut. then I take tape and wrap it
around the threads. then I thread the new tie rod right to the
tape. remove the tape and put the jam nut back and tighten.
You will need an alignment when done.

The methods I use are covered in this video, I know I use air tools but they really do work the best for that type of work.

I’ll give the 2 wrench method a try. I have a Milwaukee electric impact wrench for the other nut on the knuckle.

                Thank you
