Recently I made a forum about a very loud rattling noise (different from what I have now)
I ended up spending 4200$ on a new 3.7l engine
When I first got it back I started it up and heard a loud clatter that subsided along with a loud tick at idle.
I’ve driven about 600 miles on the new engine which is still not broken in yet because it still burns oil. When at idle and I hear a very very faint tick. When I rev it up (not fear related at all) I hear a tick that is rhythm to the RPMs. When I’m driving I don’t hear a tick at all. When I let off the gas I hear (ticktickticktick tick…tick…tick) then stops around 1000 RPMs. I cannot hear it when giving gas only when it is coming to an idle. Could this just be the lifters wearing in?

This engine doesn’t have lifters. It has hydraulic cam followers between the rocker arm and chain-driven cams. Thus, there also is no adjustment for valve clearance either. However, the noise you are hearing, without a video to be able to try to hear it myself, may just be “normal” noise for these notoriously clicky, ticky engines. There are two likely sources. One, the plastic intake seems to amplify fuel injector operation, and two, the evap purge valve solenoid makes a rhythmic clicking sound when it is active (usually on decel and idle, on command of the computer). Neither of those sources of noise indicate a problem and are characteristic of the engine. With that said, since I haven’t heard the noise for myself, it may be neither of those. However, I did want to point those things out. Is the engine oil at the correct level? How does the engine run otherwise? Anything else out of the ordinary? Any CEL codes? Is the fuel economy correct?

Engine runs fine. Power output is great. Exhaust sounds throaty. This engine does indeed have lifters. Different design but it does the same job. I’m uploading a video right now. I’ll post a link when it finalizes

            Cool. I’ll review the video.

What you are calling lifters are actually the hydraulic cam followers, also called HLAs (hydraulic lash adjusters), for camshafts located in the cylinder heads. Lifters ride in bores on the the lobes of camshafts that are located within the block and use pushrods to transfer the lift to the rocker arm. That may be some what “splitting the hair” semantics, but it is the proper explanation of the terms.

Semantics. It’s still oil pressure based gap adjustment.
How come that engine “still takes oil” is a much larger question. And after 600 mile son it, it already was not properly broken in, which means – drive her like hell so that piston rings set into cylinder bores. Too late now.

Statistically speaking, rings don’t break in until about 1000-1500 miles. Does not consume oil. Just on first start up it smokes from the exhaust from the oil. Here’s the video

They’re coming to get it this week. Fixing at no charge. If you know what it is (even if you have a clue) please post below as others may have the same issue some day and come across this post

Bump***. Anyone know what the sound was?
