I have had this problem for quite a while, and I have ignored it because I can work around it, but I would like to get it fixed if possible.
I drive a US version 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT 6 speed, with a 2.7L V6.
The problem started probably about a year ago, maybe a little less. Basically, the car throttle will stick open, after taking the car out of gear, and will remain open and cause the car to rev too high, sometimes the high 1000s, other times low to mid 3000s. The car will remain at the rev, sometime climb up to 3000, and will remain there until I “punch” the throttle enough to get it to come back down. I can deal with it, because I just basically rev the engine a bit ever time I take it out of gear, and it drops back down, but that is annoying, loud, and embarrassing when I am stopped at a cross walk and my car starts revving and I have to punch the gas with the person right in front of my car (I have started just slightly engaging the clutch enough to pull the revs down with the brake still on, but I’m sure that is just doing murder on my clutch.)
I have tried a few things to fix this issue:
-Checked for vacuum leaks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7QJXnaUbzk). This is an older video from back around when the problem started. This seems fine.
-Recently replaced the radiator, and had to “burp” the system which seemed to help it, but not entirely fix it.
-Did the cleaning of the throttle plate/body, with MAF cleaner and a toothbrush. It is pretty darn clean and that didn’t fix it.
-WD40 on the throttle return spring. Doesn’t fix it.
-I tested the issue with the throttle cables (gas pedal and CC) completely disconnected. Still revs, so it isn’t a throttle cable issue.I have done a little bit of diagnostic work, as I have a bluetooth OBDii, and a copy of OBD Auto Doctor. What I have found is:
-This problem pretty much only happens when the throttle has been held in for at least a second. Quick punches of the throttle will not make it stick.
-The TPS reads fine all the way through the whole range of positions. When the car is off, I can hold the gas pedal like I would to get it to stick, and it will return back to 5.1% (idle position) every time. When the gar is on, and the car is revving, it almost always returns to 6.7% and must be “punched” to return to 5.5% (which is the idle position with the car running. When the car is idling correctly, the airflow rate is about 4.64 g/s. When the throttle sticks (6.7%), the air flow rate is about 7.63g/s and then will climb to 9.36 g/s and then up to 13-14 g/s without ever touching the pedal (the revs climb from stuck around 1600 to about 3200.Here is a video that was taken with the vacuum video, that shows data of the TPS, and a general idea of what exactly is going on. I have a CSV of the RPM, Throttle Pos, Air Flow Rate, and Timing Advance, all vs time for data with the car on and off if you would like to see it.

Ya, I have isolated the problem to that, I was more wondering if anyone had any ideas on what to test, or things that have worked in the past.
A new TPS cost money that I don’t really want to spend if it isn’t the problem. The fact that the air flow rate is increased as well when it is revving (see CSV file) means that there isn’t a vauum leak, and it is metered air. I would think the air needs an opening to get in, which leads me to believe it isn’t the TPS. Then again, the TPS could not be completely returning to it’s closed position and it itself is what is keeping the throttle open.
I’m just at a loss, and would like to fix it cheaply, because I will be selling trading in the car shortly and don’t really want to have to explain the problem and how to work with it to the dealer/new owner.

The vehicle would not be running when you do this. This would be to check for mechanical binding.
Well, its a difference of basically 1.2%, so I don’t know if it would be noticeable without the car running. And without the TPS, I wouldn’t be able to check it through OBDII. I read elsewhere that it revved like that because it was still in open loop mode. Would it still rev up like that if I let the car heat up to running temp? Then unplug the TPS, and test for sticking? A used TB from a pull-a-part is like $30, and aTPS from amazon would be like $20. I don’t really want to replace both if I don’t have to.

i have choice to find what i need or they give me credit.
in other words i spend 30 dollars thats the credit i’ll get for next time.

I too believe you have an issue with your TPS. As for testing, if it were me, I’d monitor the live data with the engine off while observing the TPS reading. If it doesn’t have a smooth progression, or gets stuck at a particular voltage, then the sensor, it’s wiring or connector, are likely bad. It could also be a PCM issue, but you would need to rule out the other possibilities first.
