      Fiddy here!

So, with the unvailing of the new Toyota Supra thing, the FT1, I kind of thought to my self “What happened?”.

All these new aged cars… The GT-R, Stingray, FT-1… They’re all computer-driven. What I mean by that is that everything about the car is driven on a computer. Sure, a lot of it has to do with the driver, but the performance of the car itself is corrected with a computer. Oh, your back end is sliding out, let the computer fix that.

Personally, I HATE this computer guided crap. If I wanted to have a car drive it self on the track, I’d build a robot. I’d much rather have the back end of my car slide out and have some real fun instead of having a computer correct it. I believe, as an enthusiast, that the driver should drive the car, not the computer. Thoughts?

Most of it has to do with government regulation. People actually sue the Obama administration, state & federal government, NHTSA, etc because they can’t drive and want to blame someone or something else when they inflict personal injury or property damage on themselves or others. So every year, more restrictions and control systems are added. Eventually, the driver will be obsolete 😉

The other side of that is repair and maintenance. While it is getting much more difficult to service a vehicle without manufacturer specific computer equipment (increasing profits on dealer service depts and more frequent new car sales), there are upsides. With so many sensors and complex systems, the computers can monitor and repair themselves or provide a much more pinpoint description of what is going on, eliminating a lot of the diagnostic work the technician used to perform. Soon enough, people will be obsolete from that equation as well…

🙂 The people with the money to purchase the latest and the greatest hot vehicle out there rarely have the ability to drive the vehicle. Usually they are older and are not trained to drive a vehicle at it’s level of performance. The computers allow the owner to drive quicker than their ordinary ability would allow. Some vehicles allow you disable some or most of the computer’s ability to keep you safe if you want to. A older vehicle has less power than the newer ones and has less isolation from the outside environment. You hear and feel the power of an older vehicle and it will lead to a level of fear of that power. A newer vehicle is isolated from the sounds and feelings of the outside that help hold you back. You are not experiencing the danger in a newer vehicle until you it is too late to recover. An older vehicle will not allow such a detachment, as the only computer onboard is between your ears. Computer have their place in a vehicle, and you would be surprised to know just how many are in a average vehicle, not to mention the higher performance ones. Soon the computer will be driving without you in control, it is just the future coming and whether we accept it or not, it will be here soon.
