Thermostat Trouble

Every time i put the thermostat into my 94 Honda civic the car starts to make a squeaking/ seizing like noise after the car warms up roughly about 10 minuets. It starts quietly and then gets louder and louder the longer the car runs. All the hoses are hot including the lower hose after the thermo so it doesn’t seem that there is any blockage anyplace. The car its self runs fine i get hot air out of the vents and the heat gauge sits just under the half way mark. If i take the thermostat out tho everything runs fine but i have no hot air and the squeaking/seizing noise disappears. Ive already tried buying another thermo but both brand new thermos have the same result. When installed after the car heats up it sounds like a squeaking/seizing noise. Could this be the timing belt or water pump starting to go with the added pressure the thermostat puts in or … I live in Alberta BC so it be nice to have heat in my car when it hits -40 this winter and not have the engine seize on me some place :S

              sounds like the alternator bearing.
remove the belt and spin the alternator
by hand or with the belt removed.start the
car and see if the noise goes away.

as i shut the car off everything stops but the noise is still there for a few seconds

i thought that as well but then when i shut the car off the you can see that belt not moving and the niose is still there

is that spinning noise present when the engine is cold or only warm? does the thermostat have to be installed for the noise to appear as well?

by the way, viewpoo did you pressure test the cooling system yet?

That noise is only present after the car warms up roughly 15 minuets of driving. When its cold there’s no noise at all just runs real smooth. if i take the thermo out of the car and drive it around there isn’t any noise. Its only when i put the thermo back in the car does that squealing noise appears after the engine warms up. However with the thermo out the engine doesn’t get hot really at all maybe a quarter of the way if im lucky so it could be that the engine doesn’t get hot enough for that noise to appear with the thermo out. To me it sounds like pressure or something because in the last video after i shut the car off everything stops spinning and moving but the noise still keeps going for about 2 or 3 seconds like its depressurizing. as far as the pressure test i have to go and buy that and Im broke till this next Friday so ill have to wait till then. any other thoughts ?

You don’t need to buy the pressure tester. You can rent it at
an auto store. But You do need the deposit which you do get back.

it’s in the states. I go to Pepboys when I need to rent out tools that i’ll probably never use again or just won’t use enough to justify the cost of purchasing one. I don’t know if autozone or advance auto parts does the tool lending program or NAPA for that matter

so i took the thermo out again today and disconnected my fan so that the engine would warm up with the thermo out of it. after about 25 minuets of driving i started to get that pressure noise again. So the only part that the thermo plays in this is allowing the engine to heat up faster which brings on the noise quicker. another thing i noticed which makes me worried because i think i know what this means is after i took the thermo out i was bleeding the air out of the cooling system however the bubbles….just kept coming and coming and once i did put the radiator cap back on after i thought they had stopped i could see the bubbles at the bottom of the overflow tank bubbling up to the surface. I don’t seem to be losing any coolant tho or have any oil in the over flow tank but it is quite dirty so there possible could be. Could this all re related to that noise.Could it be a blown head gasket causing the bubbles and the pressure noise.

in the cooling system there shouldn’t be any air in it. you might have a whole new problem altogether since i can’t see how air in the cooling system could create a noise, but it can effect the heating of the car, normally causing the car to overheat. i think what you need to do is air out the system with the heater running. watch this video
