Thermostat change

I’m changing the thermostat on a 1997 Mercury Villager ( Nissan Quest ). I have the thermostat housing loose but for the life of me can’t get clearance to get it out of the black hole to clean it. I might add this is my second attempt as the initial change I left it in the engine compartment and cleaned it the best I could but it leaked. It is a real difficult area. I’m kind of mad at myself as it was a P.M. job and probably didn’t even need to be changed. Can someone tell me if I have to take more stuff off to get this thing out? Thanks.
