Hey guys and gals! So my wife is about to graduate from school and we want to get her a new car, a wagon not a hatch back but a full wagon. We do not want to spend more than 10K with less than 100K and are planning on doing a 4500 mile road trip this July with whatever we get. The cars I have been looking at are Subaru Legacy, Ford Focus and Volvo. I do most of the maintenance on our cars. So if any of your have extensive knowledge regarding reliability and maintenance costs it would be much appreciated if you would share experience and opinion alike.

On a side note we are going to be starting a family in the next year or two and the car she has now is just not safe :-/

How about a Volkswagen Jetta with the TDI, very reliable and at 50 mpg the economy of driving is great the only downside is the buy in price. Volkswagens hold their value so it will be a higher price but a better value.

I really like the VW’s but what about basic maintenance costs? Oil filter, fuel pump, CV joints, belts, air filter and other thingsam iI going to be paying half again or twice as much compared to a ford or Subaru? I did not even know that Hyundai made a wagon. What about maintenance on a Hyundai or Volvo?
