I was thinking today about the various projects I would like to do and what tools I would need for them and if it would be feesable for me to do it myself. and as I was thinking about I thought it might be a good video for eric at ETCG1.
I know from my experience that the right tools for the application make a world of difference in time and effort. but also once in a while they dont work and you have to improvise. for example the other day I was changing the seals on my transfer case. first I did the seal on the rear driveline which I had done in about 15 minutes no problem. the front seal for the 4wd however was a different story. the nut holding the yoke on was on there freaking tight I tried untill it got dark to get that thing off finally I gave up and called it a night. I had always wanted a breaker bar in my collection so I went and got one and had the nut off that I had worked on the night before for 2 1/2 hours in about 10 minutes it was ridiculous!!!! after getting it off i was using my seal puller to get the old seal out. there were only about 2 angles I could get at it and eventually I ended up just tearing it up to where I couldnt get at it anymore in those two angles. so I had to use a flat head screw driver and carefully tap it in and pry it out. so in this case even with the right tools it worked out better with the improvised tools.
then there are times when for me to work on my vehicle just isnt doable, for example a couple winters ago I had a faulty starter that stripped the teeth on my flex plate. I had minimal tools at the time, I probably had the knowledge but I didnt have a shop it was about 0 degrees and what it came down to is. is it worth spending the time outside in the snow bank freezing my kahunas off??? after asking around for help and support with no one willing to do it with me I decided that this DYI project might not be the best for me at this time.
those are just some thoughts I had that I thought would be an interesting topic for eric the car guy!!!
