If your garage was on fire and you could only save one tool from your toolbox, which would you grab first? Personally, I would wheel out my air compressor because it is my most beloved and expensive tool (I have an American made Chicago Pneumatic 26 gallon compressor). How about you?

I definitely agree anything made between the 50s and 70s for mechanics tools is of better quality the well know names are by far better. The reason is simple better steel, workers cared and took pride, and stuff was tried and tested in the real world before being released into the wild.

I think you are correct on that, here is what I add

It wasn’t just tools, anything and everything was better in that period.

If you looked at my tools you’d probably think what a bunch of junk. I don’t own two screwdrivers that match. But everything in my tool chest has been selected over the years to fill particular needs – selected or didn’t break and as a survivor has proved it’s quality.. They are all special to me. Often, when I buy a new tool I never think to use it because I have my entire inventory memorized. In other words it is a custom set for me. So, what would be the purpose of saving one tool? Better to lose them all and start over.

Story time: I was working on the Subaru this evening when Deborah brought me coffee. I had the front up on stands and she asked, “Is that safe?” Well, I had stands on the frame and then for giggles I stuck one in the middle at the back. I slid the creeper over and checked the stickers on the stands – 5.5 tons, 5.5 tons and 6 tons. “Honey I think I’m safe.”

One? Dang… that’s tough. I’d probably have to say the antifreeze tester my dad gave me from the 70s. I doubt it’s replaceable.
If it looks a lot like a turkey baster i have those as well. One for coolant and One for Batteries.

The one tool I can’t live without for sentimental reasons is my dad’s 1/2″ Drive Round head 1970’s fine tooth quick release Craftsman ratchet with knurled turning knob.

I have this same exact ratchet, it’s irreplaceable!

I would have to say my matco ratcheting screwdriver set. This was the first tool that i bought from a big name professional company. It has been used for many years and is always my go to screwdriver.

I have a Snap-on SSOMR48 magnetic tip ratcheting screwdriver I found in the road. Great tool.

I love my off-set ratchet. But I am currently in love with my ratcheting flare nut wrenches. Just because they have been making life a little easier.

If my garage is on fire, I am putting it out. If the hose doesn’t work I will kill every living thing in my neighborhood and use their blood to quench the flames. I would even pour out my beer on it (tear comes to my eye)

But if I had to pick I am saving my Modis. At least I could still pull down cash from doing diagnostic work while rebuilding my toolset.
