Hmm, that sounds like a whine at a multiple of the crankshaft speed. If it’s not the rollers or bearings driven by the belt, that only leaves like the starter ring gear. Maybe your starter isn’t disengaging. Less likely, the oil pump drive gears.

I had a different car w/ a stuck starter and this seems to be something different.

I don’t think there is a problem w/ the starter.

After 90 seconds the noise reduces by about half and is much more tolerable.

The noise seems to be coming from the top back (near the firewall) of the motor..

Not so much from the bottom…

I almost wonder if it could possibly be something w/ the air intake? That more or less seems to be where it is coming from..

It also appears that the oil may be overfilled going by the dipstick.. Wonder if that could make a noise? Easy enough correct.

        Thanks for input!

There is nothing that goes around by the air intake.

I would still bet on the starter.

🙂 Wow, you got a good one there. Since you mention the back of the engine and this is an automatic, you may want to jack up the car or put it on a lift and run the engine and get underneath the car and see if you can isolate the noise. You could be having a flywheel problem or a torque convertor making the noise and blaming it on the engine. You are getting no where staying at the front and trying to rule things out, it is time to look and listen from different directions for clues.
Now something making this much noise has got to be making some wear marks on this engine somewhere. Some place there is some wearing away of metal making this noise. I would look all over the top and the bottom of the engine to see if you can see some worn areas on this motor. Good Luck.

There may be a missing accessory that is supposed to be under the power steering pump. There looks to be a an empty hole or so where a bolt is supposed to go.

Also towards the area in question is a lot of dried up rust as if rusted water had spilled and then evaporated ?

              relevant clues ?

After seeing the video I was going to say that it sounded like a power steering pump working dry.

Exactly what I was thinking, I have a Focus that makes a very similar noise and I know it’s the power steering pump.

Power steering is NOT connected. The accessory/drive/serpentine belt is OFF of the car. There is a separate power steering problem though.

Why is the serpentine belt off?

gotta narrow down the possibilities of the noise.

It really sounds like the timing belt is rubbing on something but since you said the noise is at the rear of the engine it kinda rules that out. I’m betting on a transmission issue. Possible aerating fluid or plugged filter.
                            Is the fluid full?

that’s my next step.. drain a bit of the engine oil (seems over filled) and then see what the transmission fluid looks like

Hmmm, where is my best bet to place the stethoscope to diagnose a transmission noise. It seems to be coming from up top and not down below.

While only in gear the car leaks transmission fluid if that helps any.

A noise this gross cannot be all this mysterious.

Is there a way to start the car without the electric starter? Bump start?

Not so much anymore, but my brother in law was a tow truck operator. Least car towed? Honda. Most car towed? Audi.
