I know this post is over a month old but thought I would respond anyway. I have the loadpro leads and like them. I don’t use mine very much just being a DIYer but they do make testing circuits easy. The youtube videos pretty much explain how it works, just puts a load on the circuit so you can accurately test the circuit. I do use the leads on my multimeter all the time. They have a hollow tip instead of a point so they don’t slip and makes it nice for testing pins in harnesses. I also have Dan Sullivan’s book and would recomend that also. It’s written in a way that I was able to easily understand it and actually get what he was saying. I can’t read a text book, get bored and just don’t comprehend a lot of what I read. But I was able to read the electrical troubleshooting book and understand it. Both the leads and the book are well worth the money in my opinion. For a pro they make quick work of diagnosing an electrical problem, for the DIYer they are nice to trace down weather the problem is in the wiring or the actual part, say fuel pump. So you aren’t just throwing parts at the problem.

          Hello,

If you are still interested in these leads, I would definitely pull the trigger, so to speak. I bought them about two weeks ago off of Amazon. They seem to preform well, and do exactly as advertised. I like the demonstrations putting the load pro against the power probe and this is the one that got me on Dan Sullivan’s product. Though the powerporbe looks like a decent tool as well. We’ve probably all seen what Eric the car guy did with his powerprobe – and probably made everyone want one of those as well… If you use both tools as designed they both have benefits and specific areas of advantage.

          Cheers.

You can make a load pro yourself actually. All it is is a resistor that’s wired in parallel with a jumper that’s interrupted with a switch to force the juice to flow through the resistor stuffed into a probe type handle. It “loads” the circuit at .5A @ 12vdc. I think that’s a 25 ohm resistor if memory serves. Simple design that’s an invaluable test tool IF you understand how it works and what it’s telling you.

Basically electricity takes the path of least resistance. so if you do a V-drop test with a loadPRO lead on a good wire, that 25 ohm resistor isn’t the path electricity will take and the meter will show 0VDC flowing through it. If the wire can’t take the amperage for some reason, say due to corrosion or a break, then that 25 ohm path becomes less resistance than the corroded or broken path and some of the electricity will flow that way. The meter will register voltage and tell you how much you’re loosing due to V-drop.

Keep in mind: a wire with all strands broken except for one strand will “pass” a continuity test but will fail under load. a loadPRO used in a V-drop test will “fail” the same wire that just passed a continuity test.

So if you’re good at electrical testing then this will help you. If it confuses you it’ll probably confuse you more until you dig in and understand the things at work.

EDIT: loadPRO and powerprobe test different things. One is not a replacement for the other.

There are ways make your own, and even write ups/instructions for how to make this tool. However, this Dan Sullivan who is responsible for making and marketing the well designed and very convenient load pro leads has staked a lot in this tool and is having a lot of difficulty with other companies imitating and virtually steeling his product. I understand that it is sometimes hard to come up with extra money for tools, and in such dire times a little improvisation is needed. But, if I can say, please be kind to those who have taken the time, investment, and drive to invent and market something…

I love my leads, and really think the product is GREAT, it does what it says it will, and 70-80 dollars really isn’t that much money. Plus, the book that you have the option of buying with the test leads is a MUST read for the new technician and old technician a like.

              Thanks,

Also just to add the test leads are really quality leads and have a feature I haven’t found on any other leads, hollow point tips. The tips are hollow which allow you to put them on pins and tabs and they won’t slip off like pointed tips. I really like the tips and keep them on my fluke at all times even when I don’t need the loadpro feature.

The book is also a nice read. It really goes into detail about electrical theory and is written in a way that anyone can understand. I was able to sit down and read it and understand it where most books just put me to sleep!

I have the test leads and they do work as advertised. I’ve also been lucky enough to go to one of Dan Sullivan’s classes a couple years ago. He’s a really smart guy knows his stuff. But back to the leads, I too never take them off my meter. Once you figure out how you’re supposed to use it properly and what the tool is telling you, the leads can save you time and mistakes.
