From a business uni study that is done every year:

It often amazes me how many people say the big 3 aren’t so American anymore. This proves otherwise. The criteria for making top of this particular list is very explicit. Headquarters, parts sourcing, engine assembly, R&D, Transmission assembly etc. This study takes all those into account. By individual vehicle, GM has the most made here in the US(or Canada). Ford being second and Chrysler having a few top 10 spots as well. For the 2015 model year, GM comes in first for most American vehicle. Thoughts?

That is hella annoying to read that chart. It looks like the engine and trans are assembled here but, shipped elsewhere and installed along with all other parts in another country. That means a large majority of the labor for assembly is elsewhere. Though I am sure majority of the engineering, white collar, etc is US based. So basically only college level or above is US based the rest is outsourced. Instead of the way it used to be where it was all completely done here.

This is why people say they are not built here because it will say assembled in Mexico or Canada most of the time for US vehicles. Instead of us taxing imports like we should to make them as costly as making the product here, we instead force our companies to go elsewhere as much as possible to build something. BTW, the only reason that labor is US is because of the number of little bits made here is being added in. The actual labor put out by the individual company itself is more then likely going to be foreign.

True, but it depends on the vehicle. Canada has always had an automotive manufacturing relationship with the US so I don’t exactly consider Canada foreign. Alot of assembly and parts back in the day came from Canada as well due to the proximity of Detroit, Auburn hills and Dearborn. Outsourcing manufacturing happens for many reasons most of which get into the political so I won’t mention them here.
