      While in Charlotte NC for the Bank of America 500, I met with my friend Charles aka HumbleMechanic. He drove me from the airport in a VW TDI. I was impressed with the car and it dawned on me that Charles might be the perfect person to talk to about the aftermath of dieselgate since he’s a working VW tech. This video covers that conversation.

        It’s such a shame that this happened, because diesel is a really decent fuel when done right. It just puts out too much NOx right now. Diesel has more stored energy in it per cubic centimeter (I think the term is CC, not sure) than gasoline. So theoretically, it should be able to make more power on the same amount of fuel. Additionally, because diesel is compression ignition (and heat, I know), they can run much leaner at cruise. We’re talking 21:1+ when it comes to air fuel ratios. Gasoline engines can only withstand about 17:1 AFR IIRC. Overall, diesel is a more efficient fuel, just not the cleanest one right now. Urea tanks on passenger cars like the Jetta/Passat/Golf are possible, but also make the car heavier, which sacrifices mileage. Guess that’s one of the many reasons they didn’t do that.

          [size=5]What about DEF? I know very little about diesels but I thought DEF was supposed to be the miracle cure-all for diesel emissions.
          Is NOx still an issue in diesel vehicles using DEF?[/size]
