Alright. So I has a 1973 Ford F250 Ranger XLT, Camper Special, 390. The previous owner added a carb spacer, 600 cfm Edelbrock 4bbl, and headers with a dual exhaust. I’ve re curved the distributor and added a free flowing air cleaner.

So I’ve owned it for about 7 months now and I have completely redone the interior on it. Now that the interior is done, now comes for the outside. Well I don’t have a lot more money, but I want a black exterior. So without further adue, here is the Chronicles of the 55 dollar paint job.

I am going to attempt to cheat as little as possible. I do still have a bit of masking tape from a previous project, as well as some sanding blocks and other random supplies, but no paint whatsoever.
Now this will be a step by step guide more or less so it shall be fun to go through. I am working in a driveway and am not able to separate the bed, so that ought to be funs.

The starting point

This was my 73 the day right after I bought it. I gave her a good wash and took pictures. Some chrome was in the bed, tailgate hinges missing, just tons of things wrong. But hey she was $500 bucks. The search for a name started.

The next visual upgrade

So during a lull in my interior work I moved on to stage 1 of exterior makeover. I sanded down the wheels and shot them with black. I was also in the process of removing the chrome support tabs (sold off the chrome to feed the stereo addiction). This is more of less how she (Betsy) sits right at this moment.

The monies as of 7/4/2013 @ 2:18

This is the 55 I have left over from a trip. This ought to be interesting to keep in budget the whole time. In no way am I nervous, it will just be exciting. Any help would be appreciated or just subscribe to this and sit back and watch the fun.

So I made a video of how to make one of these (I will post the link in the “morning”). This is a real simple name tag and its goin in the upper corner of the tailgate. Should look badass.

Being that I do paint and body work. I know I couldn’t BUY sandpaper to sand your truck for less than $55.

So this should be good!

Alright, I will assume you are being supportive with your remark. First off it is to be a 20 footer, maybe 15 at best. It needs to hold up for a year, maybe two. No more. And finally it is a high schoolers truck that will be put through hell. While I don’t have the money for a show quality paint job, id like something to protect the metal better than the current paint is doing, and plus a colour change would be nice. Is this a pro job? No. But will it protect a 500 dollar truck better than the 40 year old paint does? Yes.

Day 1 – Well I began taping the things that needed to be taped. I finished the supply of tape I had stashed from random projects. I used two garbage bags to protect the grille from getting paint splattered on it.

I started painting the stripe down the side of the truck in the dent. I didn’t tape it off because I have the rest of the truck to still sand down and … well I ran out of tape. But I kept it inside the dent for the most part and theres not a lot of overspray to deal with. I think the blue looks good with the white, but I can’t wait to see it against the black.

Well I had just a bit of spray paint left in blue from the stripe and I got bored watching paint dry. And I had a bit of black spray paint laying around from another project. So long story short, I had some fun

Yep it was immature to do it, but it sure was fun. And it serves as a funny picture for my profile pic on forums. Well the blue was two cans left over from what I had after finishing my interior. I am going to throw it into the 55 dollar cost anyways since they never got used for the interior. Plus now I get to fudge on the numbers and go get me a tea from the local quik trip

Total Spent – $3.46
Spray Paint (Blue) – $1.52 a can
Tax – $41 cents

Remaining – $51.54

Hours Spent – 3 hours 12 minutes

Keep it up.

Just not sure the spray paint is going to last. I had a buddy who did his fender white to match his car and it lasted 2 months here in the Arizona sun. When he has asked me to paint it, I could have used a piece of notebook paper as sandpaper to remove the rest of it off.

Maybe to help you with the hardest part of any paint project.. the masking.. since you’re using spray paint. Do the edges and you can skip from masking say the entire window off.. just the edges. Oversrpay will be minimal and you can use reducer or acetone to remove any overspray off. Works well. Just don’t touch the spray paint as it will remove it fast.

Can that acetone method clean it off windows if it has set for a little bit? I kind of oversprayed on the windows on the inside, and had just started accepting it. And I understand that usually spray paint isn’t the most ideal method, but the weather is usually a little less brutal here than in Arizona. And I hit my buddies truck with some black on the hood and it looked good for about 2 years as long as he kept it waxed (did for the first year, second not so much).

Yes, you can use it on a rag and it should take it right off. IF it’s on the flat surface, a razor blade and some Windex will work as well.

Will work on all trim/rubber/etc.

You could buy clear coat in a spray can and this will add protection to your spray paint.

Yes I was planning on shooting clear over all of it. Thats what I did with the hood to keep it looking alright for so long.

You are past 50% of your budget. How is it looking to stay on track?

I’m looking forward to seeing how this comes out. I know rattle bombs aren’t the most ideal way to paint a car, but if you are careful with them, I bet you can get a decent enough finish. I read a thread on a Honda forum where a young guy painted his car black with auto paint, and rollers. All I had to judge by were pictures on the internet, but from what I saw, it was at least a decent 20 foot car, and he kept his cost pretty low.
