testing for a bad MAF sensor

so i decided to test see if the MAF sensor was my issue for bad gas milage so i unplugged it and started the car seems no different in sound. I noticed for the 1st time ever since owning the car that both cooling fans kicked on within a minute of the engine running. Since the fans in this thing have NEVER worked even as i overheated does this mean the fans can cause drag and bring my MPGs down?

no fans wont change mpg but maf will if you have one, need info on car…

well when u have the A/C on it kicks the fans on and gives u bad MPG maybe with both fans running all the time its giving the engine the same effect as having the A/C on?

If you don’t have a code for a MAF it’s likely good. You can try cleaning it but to be honest I don’t think you’ll get much MPG out of it. You’ll likely get more with properly inflated tires and careful driving habits.

well eric my tyres are at proper pressure they never need air to speak of except in winter. And i dont know if the problems is fixed i noticed that my fans were spinning due to low oil i had oil up the the MIN mark on the dipstick and dumped in a quart of oil not only did it stop the fans from spinning it also substancually quieted the engine. Ill keep everyone updated

If you unplugged the maf sensor and heard no change in rpm than the maf is bad they won’t always trigger a code you can try cleaning it but that will rarely fix the problem it’s best to just replace it I’m assuming u have a map sensor as well since your car doesn’t stall after pulling the maf?

i discovered a dime sized hole in my EGR hose removing the hose smells of oil and gas is this my problem?

Yes i have a MAP sensor on the firewall the MAF sensor is between the throttle and air filter not sure it that is a MAF or a IAT sensor is there a difference?

Replacing parts without evidence that they’re bad is not a good practice. It gets expensive and is often counterproductive. And yes, if the part is bad it should trigger a code.

It’s more likely than you MAF or MAP sensor. I’d repair it and see if you still have the issue.
