Testing an electric EGR?

So, I’ve had an idle problem for while now and I have been going through some of the articles on here to try and figure things out. So, I want to check my egr valve but I have no idea how to do that. Eric talks about testing some of the old mechanical styles in one of his article, but I have an electric one so that doesn’t really apply. Any help would be great. Thank you!

Year, make, and model. It helps us help you. This is especially true for your trouble because there are quite a few different types of EGR valves. They do the same job, but have different ways to do that job.

Since you didn’t say what brand of car you’re working on the only way that I know of testing a digital EGR valve is with a scan tool with bi-directional controls so you can open and close the valve and read the percentage of the opening and closing of the valve.

That said, you could spray water on the base or tubing of the EGR after idling for 10 or 15 minutes and if it boils off chances are that the valve is not closing tight.

I’m sorry, I guess I didn’t realize that. I am working on a 2004 Honda accord 4cyl. And I have no fancy scan tools that can do something like that.

Yeah, without the proper tools testing is a little harder. Basically, when the engine is idling there should be no flow through the valve. If the base of the valve is extremely hot it must be letting exhaust gasses to leak by.

You could remove the valve and make sure the pintle is clean and seating properly and while pushing on it to see if it moves smoothly.

Step one, remove the valve and check the condition of the passages. If they appear to be blocked clean them out with a metal hanger and some throttle body cleaner. You can use the same throttle body cleaner to clean the valve passages.

Now there’s probably at least 3 wires going to the EGR, a 12v a 5v signal and a ground. with some creative jumper wiring you can use the 12v and ground to fully open the valve. You can do it first as a bench test out of the car then on the car. Opening the EGR at idle should stall the car. If the car doesn’t stall, assuming the bench test was successful, there’s something stopping the flow of the EGR.

                    Wow, that’s genius. Thank you!
