It’s accurate. The battery is there to start the car, and to act as a filter for the electricity coming out of the alternator, by absorbing voltage spikes. However, the way I’d test an alternator is to start the car and put the leads from a multimeter on the battery terminals. 13.8v to 14.2v is generally considered normal. I consider the alternator OK all the way up to 15v, so if it’s reading a little more than 14.2, don’t worry about it too much. Anything less than 13.8v at idle with no loads on is a sign of an alternator that’s barely working/not working at all, and it should be replaced.
