Post the things that really drive you up a wall. I will start.

Mr. drops his second set of wheels off to have winter tires swapped on and then decides when he comes back to have you put them on. You already flagged the job and got paid for it. Now you have to take your place out of line for a new RO with more work to earn a living off of to pull this jackasses car in, for free, and take his old wheels off and put the ones you just put tires on and then pack up the ones you just took off all for free. All the while watching a nice gravy RO go to the guy in line behind you. It’s even worse when you are actually working on a car and have to stop while you are on a good pace to make money to do it.

I also hate when you are working on a car that is paying out 14 hours of work and it’s a Saturday and you need that 14 hours to make a week and you are down to the wire and someone comes in for a waiter oil change that pays 0.3 and 0.3 for a rotate and you end up not finishing the good paying job for a measly 0.6.

When you spend years educating yourself about complex systems and then back at the dealer you get rewarded by only doing diagnosis jobs, normally warranty then don’t get the repair back which pays because you are doing another DIAG.
Learn how to change oil and align and earn some money, god help anyone who can actually fix cars!

        Sorry for ranting!

Going behind anyone, especially if they already started taking it apart, had to do a motor on an explorer and the intake and valve covers were already off. A service writer that wont STFU an do his job, just BSing with everybody about nothing. Having to do anything for no pay.

How about filthy cars, especially when you have to do interior work on a car that is someones trash dump. Not only is it nasty, but you have to work around it and I’ve seen somethings that have scared me for life haha.

The service writer not asking if the customer has a wheel lock. Then spending a half hour looking for it in the car only to find the customer didn’t even know they had wheel locks.

My Dad absolutely hates digging for a wheel lock.

I would have to say it would be customers who think they know more than you. I am a Transmission re-builder for AAMCO And i am an ASE master tech. Don’t tell me that you was going to fix it but didn’t have the time and you did all the research on line and it didn’t look that hard. And I try to get those people back in to the shop while I have there trans in a heaping pile in the middle of the table. just seeing the look of confusion in there eyes is enough for me.

hacks that rip people off and get lazy not doing the job right. An alignment doesn’t take 2 minutes to do, and brake pads don’t need to be replaced at 6mm left. Also, the brake rotors CAN be resurfaced, don’t just throw new rotors at the car cause you’re too lazy to resurface them. Makes my blood boil sometimes.

Now that I dont understand, I make more money if I resurface rotors instead of replacing them.

not at my shop. at my shop you get same labor if you replace them or resurface them.

I get 2.0 with the resurface and 1.5 if replacing them. It’s probably the service advisor who talks them into getting new ones, because it makes the dealership more, not the tech, and the advisor is paid on the bottom line. Either that or he could be like the guy we had last week who was told by the worthless folks at AutoZone that you can’t turn rotors anymore because new rotors are already so thin. AKA – They were trying to get a sale and in the end, did not get that, caused me to trash 2 good rotors that could be turned and lose 0.5 of work.

Also, on alignments, 50% of them that I do are already green, so it does not take me long. They still have to pay the shop for setup, because the shop has to pay me for it. Nothing to do with laziness or ripping anyone off.

Ok, I don’t have to deal with service writers, run my own shop and employ one other tech. Biggest pet peeve, making appointments to try and keep the day full for myself and my co-worker, and jamming 6 oil changes in around all the other work, and every single person that makes a oil change appointment comes in and says the magic words “oh by the way, while you have it in here…. (add 6 more things to the list) and can I pick it up in half an hour.” Now you already have 8 hours of work set up for 2 guys, and these 6 special people each add 2 hours of crap, that they think should be handled for the cost of an oil change. Some little things like head light bulbs, brakes, sway links and the like, don’t just pop out in 3 minutes like they used to 15 years ago.

is this a circus you work at or? sounds like you need to find another shop in my opinion

Most of what I said was at my last shop. I laugh at the “circus” question because now that you mention it…

I really love how I was hired as a used car guy at my current shop doing mostly Inspection/LOF work with lots of brakes and tires, and then when one of the Lube Kids quit and another went to part time for school, I got stuck on the Lube rack and haven’t done anything since. I love the manufacturer, I get along great with most of my coworkers, but I can’t say anything nice about my bosses.
