Hi guys and gals, new member and was recommended from a friend. Got some symptoms I hope you can help me diagnose.

2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, Just replaced my lower intake manifold gaskets and my upper intake manifold. I put everything back in and then refilled my coolant and burped the system.

My new issue is when I drive to work in the morning about 10-15 mins in my car starts whistling like a tea kettle below 1500 RPM. When I get above 1500 it seems to disappear (It could be drowned out my the engine revving). Also when I turn the car off the whistle sputters out.

I took it to autozone so the guys could help me figure it out. They seem to think it’s my power steering pump. The wheel moves in and out a bit. He also said that my water pump is close to needing to be replaced.

My car steers normal, although when I turn the wheel it makes a whiiiiiierrrr noise.

Thoughts? Just started doing my own mechanic work and I’m really enjoying it. Would appreciate any help or thoughts.

      Thanks!

Without hearing the noise it’s very difficult to say what the issue is. That said, anytime you do a lot of work like that and have an issue afterward, it’s always a good idea to go back over the work to check for problems. More info can be found in this article I wrote on finding noises.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

i think this will help. remove the pcv valve from under the map sensor make sure there is a o ring around the pcv valve it seals the valve to the upper intake.kind regards jerry

Could still be a few things, but you mention 10-15mins in it starts…right about the time the fan would likely kick on. It sounds like a bearing of some type, not a vacuum leak, at least to me from that short video.

Easy tests, pull fan relay or fuse once you hear the noise while it’s running at idle. If it’s a pulley (idler or otherwise), (car off)yank serpentine belt, spin each pulley manually to see if there’s noise beyond the norm, sometimes feeling like it’s got grains of sand resisting movement; or simply like you would for a wheel bearing, checking for play.

Can also zero in on it with a mechanic’s stethoscope, rolled up magazine, etc.. Most of which I believe Eric covers in the link he gave you:

Took a look at the PCV valve this morning. It didn’t have the o-ring on it. I put one on and drove to work. It sounded like it was gonna start making the tea kettle noise again but after a few little noises it stopped.

That might have been the problem! Hopefully it doesn’t do it again, If I can make it home today without that noise I think she’s fixed.

                Thanks all!

It sounds to me like a bearing in one of your serpentine belt driven components. I believe that’s the 3800 series engine by what I could see in the video. Be careful with the car running…then use a mechanic’a stethoscope (cheap at Harbor Freight) or a long piece of heater hose. Move it around all the pulleys, alternator, idler pulleys, tensioner, AC compressor pulley, etc. Try to zero in on sound location. Also you might see if it changes with the AC turned on and off…That would help you rule out the AC compressor clutch assembly. Water pumps are known for making interesting noises when the bearings begin to go out. Also, try raising the rpm’s with the throttle cable to see if the noise changes, intensifies, etc. Have a buddy put the car in reverse and brake torque it while you listen under the hood. It goes without saying, but be cautious around the serpentine belt and moving parts. Best of luck to you.

One additional thought…Check the radiator cooling fans just behind the radiator. Also, with the engine cold, you could check with the AC turned on (this will cause the fans to come on even though engine is cold). Then turn off the AC, and the fans should turn off ad well…This might help you check for the noise here.

Don’t feel bad about leaving that O-ring off…I left one off one time and supposedly I knew what I was doing.

Certainly hope I was wrong about that noise and that’s all it is. All about cheap and easy.

I just realized I forgot to come back on here and let you all know that it was my PCV Valve. After I put the O-Ring back on it worked. No more whistle.

Thanks Eric for this website. It’s helping me stretch what’s left of my car’s life. I hate paying mechanics for work I can do.
