      My front right outer tie rod is making a banging noise and is ready to be replaced. I was able to get the end free from the boot but am having trouble taking the old end off. I let some penetrating oil soak into the bold and it still won’t come lose. It doesn’t look like there is a a nut to loosen because there is a metal cylinder with a nut on each side. Am i doing something wrong, is there a trick to getting it off? It won’t let me upload the pictures of it so i put them in a dropbox folder.

        Loosen the outside nut (of the two on the cylinder) and unscrew the outer tie rod… mark how deep it is.. The key is to try to install the new one at the same length so your alignment isn’t thrown way off….

          There is only one nut on each side of the metal tube.

            OK… I thought you had an older vehicle…. Put the stud back into the hole (outer tie rod) and get a wrench and turn the outside adjusting nut to the left…. Putting the stud back in the hole will help keep the adjusting nut from turning…. The nut may be hard to break, but once it does, you just unscrew the outer tie rod…

              You need to loosen the outer nut so it’s not pressed against the metal tube. To do this you’re going to need two hefty wrenches. Then when you have the nut loose, you have to unscrew the outer tie rod. Which can be a huge hassle, as it’s screws into the middle rod by 1 to 2 inches, and corroded all along that length. The inner row will want to turn, so you’ll have to hold that part steady with a big wrench on the inner nut.

              Sometimes two minutes of a plumber’s propane torch will heat up the tube enough to let you unscrew the end.

              Sometimes you have to take an angle grinder and cut all the way down to the bolt along one side or even two sides to free it up.

                I had a car yesterday (Kia) that was similar to yours. Both sides were soo seized that I had to remove them both, clamp them in a vice, heat them up with a acetylene torch and unscrew the whole deal. They squealed and squawked the whole way.

                I cleaned and lubed everything so doing the alignment was easy.

                Yours does not appear that bad but just letting you know what you can get into.
