2004 Chevrolet Tahoe with 175K blows ice cold air at times(45 degrees) and for some unknown reason switches to hot air(95 degrees) I ride around with a thermometer in vents to confirm temperature. This A/C has been an ongoing problem. Below describes another problem and what I did.

Last summer it would do a similar problem. It would blow cold on one side and hot on the other. For a while if I shut tahoe off and back on it would normally fix problem. It came to a point where that did not work so I replaced blend door actuator recently and the problem is as described above. Any help appreciated.

        Sounds like the blend door.
Try unhooking the battery for an hour or so then hook it back up. This will make the door re calibrate.
If you have an anti-theft stereo make sure you have the code to enable it after hooking the battery back up.
Let us know if this helps.

It may be the blend door as mentioned, but it could also be the controls of that blend door. It would be great if you could pull codes from the BCM as that might yield an answer to the problem. I thought a low refrigerant charge could also be an issue, but if that was the case I wouldn’t think you’d see 45º from the vents. More info on HVAC issues here.

Here’s how the day went. Went to lunch to take care of some business. A/C blew ice cold the whole ride to bank. Came out of bank after about 20 minutes and A/C blew 90 degrees the rest of way back to work. Got home, unhooked battery for over 2 hours. Ran to store and now does nothing but blow 90 degrees after having battery unhooked. Any more suggestions and thanks in advance.

+1 for the blend door. I had the same hot & cold cycling problem with my Blazer last year. While our vehicles aren’t exactly the same, the internet tells me that the same part number I ordered for my Blazer is an available part for your Tahoe too. Read this post to see what you’re probably up against.

Yeah. I’m guessing that blend door actuator needs to be replaced. It was probably on it’s last legs and just went kaput.

Blend door… If you know anyone with a Tech 2 scanner they can perform a function test on the actuators and most likely to blend door actuator is bad.
                  Good luck.

Took to dealer and paid the $130 for them to diagnose. All blend doors are functioning properly. They told me that the compressor is leaking. After it sits for a while, A/C blows 45 degrees cold for a while but then starts blowing around 85degrees. Would that be consistent with a leaking compressor?

It only takes around 2lbs of freon. If the compressor is leaking it will never blow 45 degrees… Doesn’t sound right to me…
