Just wanted to offer a huge thanks for videoing the Toyota 4Runner steering shaft repair… I have an ’08 Tacoma with 80K miles and had exactly the same problem this spring. My intermediate shaft U-joint looked fine (no rust and the finish still factory) but after hitting it with PB Blaster the steering smoothed right out and told me that it was the cause of the stiff steering. If I hadn’t seen your video I wouldn’t have known to look there, so this weekend I’m gonna swap it out for a new shaft ($222 at Toyota) but I’m going to add a rubber boot to mine to protect it from these Ohio winters. My sons ’08 Tacoma needed his replaced a year ago (he had an extended warranty in a Buffalo NY environment) and the guy at the dealership told me that mine was the 2nd one he sold that day, so I think this is a pervasive problem for Toyota and deserves a better (booted??) design to protect the U-joint bearings. A little grease zerk would also work if they included it in the maintenance schedule. Loosing your steering is a big deal, and mine went from normal to bad in a couple days. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was included in a recall in a year or two. Thanks Eric!!!
