So this is very dumb, basic question that I do not understand.
Lets say I am replacing struts.
I see videos where people will lift the vehicle, put it on jack stands, then remove the jack and put it under the control arm to “support the suspension”.
Can someone tell me what can happen if you DON’T “support the suspension”? Does doing this give me some kind of advantage when doing the repair?
Why do you need to “support a suspension”? Can it fall off or something?

You support the lower control arms so you don’t over stretch/stress the
suspension. If the bottom hangs the top will follow. No it won’t
fall off.It just makes it easier to get the struts out because its not under any stress. Its not impossible to do it without a jack under the arm.
If you’re dealing with struts it shouldn’t matter. Once the vehicle is jacked up, there really shouldn’t be anymore stress on the suspension. The spring is contained by the strut, once the vehicle is no longer on the ground the strut is pretty much contained. The only thing I can think of is based on what was mentioned about not letting the suspension over extend. Honestly, I don’t think that’s an issue. It can’t hurt however. In my opinion there are other dangers more pressing when dealing with struts.
